Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes by Byron Hurt demonstrates an interesting view on the hip-hop culture. Everyone listens to this music, including me, but we don’t notice the meaning behind this genre. Most hip-hop artists grow up with violence and adapt to that environment. Young males act overly protected of their manhood because they grew up with that concept. According to the video, young males are in a certain box and to remain in the box you must be strong, tough, have girls, money, be a play, in control, and be dominant. It is difficult to state if violence in the hip-hop industry triggers violence in real life. Most young males idolize the artist and take extreme measures to become them, however I never heard of someone killing an individual due to his idol saying in a song. According to the video, women in color have a higher chance of getting sexually abused. Young males watch hip-hop music videos and objectify women and do not see them as an individual. This issue must be dealt with the hip-hop culture. I would like to say that both males and females are responsible for sexist images. Males label women as objects and do not consider them with any value. Since males have a certain image of attractive women, females try to expose that to receive attention. Another example, in the video a women was asked about the images videos portray about women and she claimed it does not matter how she feels about them because the videos do not describe her. Women should be offended about these videos because no female should be portrayed as objects. On the other hand, I do not blame females completely since they do get harassed even though they do not objective themselves as the women in the hip-hop
