The constitution was a large process and is the “Supreme Law of the Land.” There was a separation of powers when the constitution was being created which resulted in the Legislative, Judicial, and Executive branches of government. During this time there was a meeting called the constitutional convention, where twelve of the thirteen colonies showed up. Two plans were debated during this process of creating the constitution, the New Jersey plan and the Virginia plan. Also happening as the constitution was being created and affect the outcome was the Connecticut compromise, where the two house legislature was made, the senate and house of representatives.
The reason why the constitutional convention was called was because the existing constitution the Articles Of Confederation was not working so well.this was a problem because there was no court systems,no Chief Executive(An organizer),and the government could not force a state to pay their taxes. It is important to have these things in a government because imagine if there was no CEO to organize what taxes were being collected and which were not or if there were no courts then there would be chaos because no one will go to jail and if the government can’t make states pay taxes what can they do? These are all reasons why the articles of confederation were not good for the U.S.
Considered one of the most important documents in United States history, the Constitution was the basis of a government still functioning today. In the summer of 1787, 55 delegates from eleven of the thirteen states gathered in Philadelphia to fix the first attempt at a constitution, the Acts of Confederation. The government set up by this functioned so poorly that the entire document was scrapped thus making way for the Constitution. This provided a functioning government organized in a way that would eliminate any chance of a single party or person becoming a tyrant. The Constitution created an outline for a government with powers fairly distributed between the federal government, state governments, three branches of government and small
DBQ Essay The United States Constitution is a document that or founding fathers made in order to replace the failing Articles of Confederation (A of C). Under the Constitution, the current government and states don’t have the problems they faced when the A of C was in action. The Constitution was created in 1788, and held an idea that the whole nation was nervous about. This idea was a strong national government, and the Federalist assured the people that this new government would work. The framers of the Constitution decided to give more power to the Federal government rather than the state governments because the A of C had many problems, there was a need for the layout of new government, rights, and laws, and there was a need for the Federal
The constitutional convention was like a mouse trap. We are in a time where we consider our current condition to be unstable and unorganized as a country. We are fed lies about how astonishing our current government is, but in reality there are many aspects that are needed to be fixed. Many claim to have a vast knowledge on our broken system, yet they do less than the minimum in order to fix it. On the contrary, once the colonies got their Independence, there was one person who did see the mistakes that were in the Articles of Confederation.
The Constitution of the United States was written in 1787, but there was a grapple for its ratification that went on until about two decades after the ratification. Members of Congress believed that the first government of the United States or the Articles of Confederation, needed to be adjusted while others did not want anything to change. After the Revolutionary War, the people did not want a strong central government, because it reminded them too much of what they were trying to escape from. Under the Articles, each state had their own laws, and the need for a new Constitution was desired by many. The Constitution of 1787 created huge debates, arguments and splits in the nation that lasted for several year after its ratification between people who
The Constitutional Convention in 1787 held many problems however, they were resolved. The Constitutional Convention had two questions. How would they strengthen the national government without taking any power from the states? and, How would they balance the interests of both the wealthy and those that aren’t wealthy? 55 men agreed to make a compromise, and therefore the Constitution became a bundle of compromises.
The issues that precipitated the Constitutional Convention were the fact that “ … the framers sought to create a new government capable of promoting commerce and protecting property from radical state legislatures and populist forces hostile to the interests of the commercial and propertied classes.” The delegates were empowered to revise the Articles to meet the country’s needs, but they took it into their own hands and created an entirely new constitution. In my opinion, the Constitution of 1787 was legitimate in the social sense but was not legitimate by legal standards. The only reason that this new constitution was accepted was because it was what the United States needed at the time so the majority of the citizens agreed upon keeping it.
The federal government couldn’t even collect taxes, so they were unable to gather any money to repay their debts from the Revolutionary War. The states’ power allowed them to tax, and they ended up seeming as though they were independent countries. This is foreshadows the results what the French and Indian War caused for Britain. The French and Indian War, also commonly known as the Seven Years’ War, set Britain in debt. In order for Britain to pay off their this debt, Parliament passed many acts which taxed the thirteen colonies as much as ten times the amount of what they taxed the actual citizens of Britain; although each colony had a different amount.
Author Boyer et al. writes, “They had become convinced that unless the national government was freed of control of the state legislatures, the country would disintegrate” (Boyer, et al.). The purpose of meeting for a Constitutional Convention was to begin to place these wishes into writing and avoid this suggested national
On a humid summer’s day, in 1787, 55 delegates traveled from 12 different states to meet in Philadelphia to revise the Articles of Confederation. Although they knew that the Articles of Confederation wouldn’t hold, they never intended on replacing the entirety of the Articles. The Articles of Confederation were a form of government that was swiftly created, during the Revolutionary War. It led to a central government that lacked power to do simple tasks. The delegates seeked to create a new central government that was powerful enough to lead the country, but wasn’t ruled by one person or a group of people.
The Constitutional Convention occurred from May 14 to September 17, 1787, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The tradition was held to address issues in overseeing the United States, which had been working under the Articles of Confederation taking after freedom from Great Britain. In spite of the fact that the tradition was expected to modify the Articles of Confederation, the aim from the beginning of a number of its defenders, boss among them James Madison and Alexander Hamilton, was to make another government as opposed to settle the current one. The agents chose George Washington to direct the tradition. The aftereffect of the tradition was the United States Constitution, setting the tradition among the hugest occasions in the historical backdrop
The rebellion in Massachusetts raised questions about building a stronger central government. Therefore, leading to the constitutional convention. At first, this convention was thought to revise the Articles of Confederation, although most delegates agreed to create an entirely new document and government. This is the birth of the constitution, yet there is some disagreement among some of the smaller states. The smaller states wanted equal representation, along with the larger states.
The creation and development of the federal government under the new Constitution originated as a meeting to amend the Articles of Confederation. However, once gathered the meeting quickly became a Constitutional convention. Wherein, each delegate was allowed to voice their differing opinions in confidentiality without retribution from opposing political factions. During this convention, the Constitution for a new government was developed.
The Constitutional convention that met in Philadelphia started off as a goal to amend the articles of confederation it rapidly turned into constitutional convention. The convention would let each member to speak his mind without fear of political retribution. One of the main agreements completed in the convention was that George Washington should be president of the convention, Washington’s reputation protected the convention from accusations.
