While the North tried to stop the South from withdrawing their spot in the Union, the North also denied the Southern states rights. Sectional groups assembled in the North regarding the “unnatural feeling and hostility” to slavery in the South. “ By consolidating their strength, they have placed the strength... no avail in protecting Southern rights (Document I). The Northerners believed that slavery is not right, and also that “the demand of African slavery throughout the confederacy” is unheard of.

Throughout the war, the North and the South’s viewpoints had been continuously changing. Their opinions were both similar and different throughout the war. Both sides initially believed they would win the war, swiftly and easily. Both also realized that their thought was wrong. The North carried the idea that they were morally just and correct.
Michelle’s historical context derives from numerous ideals. One of which she had been unaware of until the year of 2008, when she found out her direct relation to a slave on Friendfield plantation in Georgetown, South Carolina. Her great- great grandfather, Jim Robinson, was one of over 200 slaves on this plantation in the early 1800s (Bond, 2012). “Michelle has said that knowing the truth about her family history has helped her understand her upbringing, and in a larger sense how the legacy of slavery continues to impact the lives of African Americans to this day” (Bond, 2012, p.2). Michelle herself recognizes the importance of the historical context to her own life and the lives of other African Americans.
The South, for example, believes that they never affected or aggressed the North in any way and blamed the North for starting the war when they just wanted to be left alone. To support my statement, the newspaper, “New Orleans Daily Crescent”, documented that, “We have never aggressed upon the North...” and, “...we have only asked to be let alone...”. While the North on the other hand, believes that slavery in the South is wrong and that it’s a sin; they believe it must be stopped. Union Sergeant Phineas Hager wrote in a letter saying, “...the more I learn of the cursed institution of Slavery, the more I feel willing to endure, for its final destruction.”. The Union side of the war believes that slavery is “cursed”, or in other words, it’s bad.
But “when the South attached less significance to its defeat than the North did to its victory, Confederate morale would no longer match the task of maintaining public will at a level necessary for victory.” (Richard Beringer, Herman Hattaway, Archer Jones, and William Still: “Why the South Lost the Civil War” , Athens, Georgia: University of Georgia Press, 1986, page 49). Additionally, the Confederates lacked a true sense of nationhood, for many Confederates could not agree on why they fought or what the Confederacy actually stood for.
Ancestors fought for the Confederate Army, the beliefs of civil and state rights during the Civil War are not far removed from the beliefs of the people Howritz encounters. Not to be ignored is the racial tension that arguably was as intense then as it is now. Many ignorant White people feel superior to black people, driven home by their discontent of the Confederate Army losing the War. The South’s remembrance of the Civil War is based both on fact and lore but mainly on racism and ritual. Yes, people do mask their justification for supporting the Rebels by stating the war was ignited by civil and state rights, other’s do not even attempt to mask their reasoning by down right stating the black race is an inferior one.
The two historical terms that I choose from Chapter 18 are The Educated Elite and The Missionary Factor. The Educated Elite was a group or class of persons considered to be superior to others because of their intelligence, social standing, or wealth. Being able to accurately document and store history has become a necessity. It guides us on future progress and lets us know how we shaped our world today. Misinterpreting or misrepresenting history can drastically change the ideals of society. This can be identified through the female suffragist movement regarding the famous person's case in 1920s, which allowed women the right to be appointed in the senate.
Monuments, displays, and museums are all examples of how history influences our daily lives. Without realizing it, we assume that the things we read and the physical history we can see is always true. History also has the effect of being “watered down” when given to the public. We can better understand that the credibility of each source from each story will differ with the information given. Having a better knowledge of how history is created by the realities seen by the historians.

Many people claim that a modern society should not honor the racist soldiers who fought for slavery. Others believe that preserving historical accuracy is essential to learning from the mistakes of the past. The opinions of thousands of citizens clash with one another over the debate between offense and information. I believe that it is most beneficial for the majority of people if the current Confederate monuments remain where they are.
In the news today, a continual debate can be found about the significance of Confederate monuments and if they should remain or be removed. Confederate monuments that have been erected throughout the U.S. should be kept because of the preservation of America’s history. For instance, in the article, The Unbearable Lightness of Confederate-Statue Removal, the author lists how slaveholder monuments aren’t the only statues being vandalized, but the Lincoln Memorial and Mount Rushmore are other symbols of U.S. history that some believe need to “blow up” (Murdock). Every historical symbol can have both people who appreciate it and who oppose it. That doesn’t mean that we should tear down all symbols, but
