In the Preface there is a brief description on the history of slavery. It is described, that slavery began in the 1600’s with the enslavement of Africans. Many of the founding fathers also had slaves themselves. Because of the large demand for cash crops like tobacco, and cotton, slavery flourished in the south. It is also described that during the American Revolution many Americans disagreed with slavery, because it went against with the promise of the constitution that all men are created equal. Because of the disagreement between the northern and southern states on the issues of slavery, the American Civil War would be what brings slavery to an end in 1865.

Fredrick Douglass was born in Tuckahoe, near Hillsborough, in Talbot County, Maryland. As a young child he knows he is stripped from his mother, to live with his grandmother, a women much too old to work, so she takes care of the small children born into slavery. Although it hasn’t been proven, it is rumored that his father was his master. His mother’s name was Harriet Bailey, she was sold to another farm to work about twelve miles away after giving birth. The separation of mother and baby was common of the plantations in Maryland. Although his mother traveled a few times to see him at night, it did not last, she died soon after from an illness. At about seven years old, Fredrick Douglass remembers his first time he witnessed a beating of a slave. His Aunt Hester was described as a beautiful woman, and his master Captain Anthony seemed very fond of her. Captain Anthony didn’t want Aunt Hester talking to no other men, and wanted her to be available whenever he called for her. Well one evening his Aunt Hester wasn’t available when Captain Anthony called for her. He tied her arms to a hook hanging from a ceiling, stood her on a stool, and stripped her naked.
