Jamestown and Plymouth, both early settlements of the United States, despite their similarities were very different colonies founded for different purposes. Jamestown was a business venture whose primary purpose was to find gold and a shortcut to Asia, and many of their colonists were not prepared to survive in such harsh conditions. In contrast, Plymouth was mostly Separatists who wanted to be free of persecution and wanted to devote their lives to God. Both faced terrible first winters, and lost many to disease, but as Jamestown had established a no work, no food policy, many starved to death. Plymouth had a handful of healthy men who cared for the sick, and worked day and night to feed the remaining 40 or so and meet their daily needs.
The new English Chesapeake colonies consisted of Virginia and Maryland and went through quite a lot to colonize. Virginia, the first successful English colony, belonged to the London Company, soon to be called the Virginia Company of London. They originally sent 144 men to explore the land for precious gems, but only 105 made it. These men consisted of gentlemen adventurers, jewelers, and artisans. They brought along no women or farmers as they were not looking to colonize, but to gather gems and explore the land in Jamestown.
Let's start with the basics. Jamestown was known as the first permanent settlement. It was located in Virginia, and most people were 17-35 and poor. There were about 300 people who came first to the new land.
In 1585, an expedition was sent by Raleigh that led to the building of a fort on Roanoke. English colonialists, amounting to almost 100 arrived at the coast of Chesapeake Bay in 1607. Jamestown was founded, which was among the first English settlements to be set in North America. These colonialists were exposed to many adversaries and dangers that included hunger, diseases, and attack from Indians.
It was the cotton makers and the iron makers. As with all expeditions to the New World the reasons vary. Some came from across the sea in the hopes of finding riches or glory, others came to spread religion or to follow their own religion without proscoucation. Whatever the reason, all those who eventually made it through the first few years had something in common, support and numbers. Support came in many ways, supplies, food, money, help from the Natives or help from home. Although important, it was not what would ultimately make or break a settlement, instead it was numbers and manpower.
The settlers that made the journey endured harsh conditions and many challenges, but ultimately persevered which made it possible for them to gain control of the territory and create a New World. Many of the colonists were Puritans who desired to purify
The three primary types of colonists who came to the New World were the adventurers, missionaries, and the colonists. They came for two primary reasons: financial and missionary. Christopher Columbus was attempting to find a financial route to Asia when he finally landed in America. Missionaries aimed at spreading Christianity to the American Indians. They did not have friends to salute them and the natives in that area were inhospitable. There was very little food during winter. Most Puritans would starve due to food shortages.
