In any association or business change is inevitable. Whether it be a good or bad, change is bound to happen. The sport of rodeo is no different, and it just so happens that a big change is happening this year. The Elite Rodeo Association has been formed and is causing a lot of controversy in the world of rodeo. The ERA’s goal is to make rodeo on the same caliber as other professional associations and increase its popularity. The Elite Rodeo Association is going to increase rodeo’s popularity by increasing its television exposure and by increasing the quality of the competitor that will be performing at these rodeos. It doesn’t matter if you are just starting out or are a legend it is a hard and difficult life. Many cowboys have to rodeo, then come home and work, then go out and try to rodeo again. They don’t know if they are ever going to be able to make it. The first ever group to break off from the PRCA was the bull riders (Cartwright np). They just like every other rodeo competitor were tired of the long days and little pay (Cartwright np). Around 20 of the world’s best bull riders met in a hotel room in April of 1992 and discussed the formation of a new association (Cartwright np). They all invested 1,000 dollars to form this association (Cartwright np). The PBR or Professional Bull Riding is what formed from that legendary meeting (Cartwright np). Before the PBR, bull riding was considered a sport for unskilled cowboys. These cowboys were the ones who couldn’t ride a horse or rope very well, however after the PBR was formed, bull riders became world renowned athletes (Cartwright np). Today the PBR is a multi-million dollar sport where bull riders can actually become millionaires (Cartwright np). The bull riders in the PBR get to go to fewer events than those in the PRCA and they make way more money. J.B. Mauney is a perfect example of this. Mauney is a two time PBR world champion bull rider (Leach np). He is only 29 years old and is the first ever six million dollar man. The biggest struggle so far has been with the PRCA. The competitors in the ERA want to be able to compete in both the ERA events and the PRCA events, however the PRCA doesn’t feel that they should be teaming up with a competitor association. The ERA has filed countless lawsuits to try to compete in both, but the PRCA doesn’t seem to be giving in. They feel that competitors should either compete in one or the other, but not both. The PRCA is also angry with the ERA since it is using PRCA credentials to advertise their competitors in this new rodeo association (Branch np). All those world champions’ contestants that are competing in the ERA got them because of how they did in the PRCA. They are also using the results from different PRCA rodeos to determine who qualifies for the ERA rodeos (Branch np).
