Spring Author Report Thesis In Douglas Adams’s novel The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, there are many themes present that are still relatable to this day. Though some may take the pessimist’s view of things, these themes that are essential to the novel can be implemented into today’s society. Many believe very important messages throughout Adams’s novel are still relevant and hold the same importance and significance today. Three major themes in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy that can be relevant in modern age are exploration, foolishness, and absurdity. Throughout the novel, there are random facts thrown in, that the reader would not have known due to the fact that most of these facts are made up or deal with something not real. For example, one piece of information the reader would not have know is “…. (a Hooloovoo is a super-intelligent shade of the color blue)” (Adams). This little break in the narration provides the audience with new information. These pieces of information thrown in throughout the novel help the reader discover more about the world in the novel. This helps support the theme of exploration because when one explores, they discover new facts that they never knew before. By getting these new pieces of information, the audience is able to explore the unknown. This novel also makes the audience different ways to think of certain objects. Another example includes “Arthur prodded the mattress nervously and then sat on it himself: in fact he had very little to be nervous about, because all mattresses grown in the swamps of Squornshellous Zeta are very thoroughly killed and dried before being put to service. Chunks of dialogue like this in the middle of the novel add an element of absurdity, due to the fact that the reader usually does not, at first, understand where there is a break in narration for this anecdote. Most of these confusing dialogues help shape the theme of absurdity throughout the novel, due to the many weird and abnormal things discussed. Many topics are thrown in randomly, but in the end have to deal with the main point of the story. This novel has lots of absurdity that adds to its charm and makes it enjoyable to read for all ages over years and years. A major theme of this novel is absurdity and it can relate to the modern age due to many confusing things that might surround one on a day to day
