The Hmong Community is very new to the American society. In the last thirty years, more and more Hmong families had immigrated into the United States. While Minnesota has the largest Hmong population and California is second to that, Hmong resides all over the United States. Some of the popular states include Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Massachusetts. I decided to write my personal essay on the Hmong community because I am a Hmong woman fighting to reason and understand issues within my community. I have my perception, biases, and first-hand experience as a Hmong woman in America. During this period, my parents emigrated from Thailand after fleeing the war. They lived in a refugee camp in Thailand for many years and came when the opportunity arise. Upon arrival, many of the people that sponsored my parents did not encourage education, instead, they told my parents that the welfare system is to help poor people and the more kids’ families have, the more help and money they receive. Being uneducated from a land of oppression, my parents knew no better. They came to America and had five children within less than five years. My two oldest siblings, born and raised in Laos and Thailand were already toddlers and school-age children. Upon arrival, they obtain proper education and assimilated with the American society. These communities were taught to utilize and take advantage of the education system, the small businesses, and workforce allowing them to be one of the fastest ethnic group with growing economic status. The Hmong people is nowhere near catching up to these ethnic groups because it has only been now, first generation Hmong Americans that are starting the trend of maintain an education and ending the poverty
