Thomas Hobbes was a 17th century British philosopher who described the original state of people as one of strife and conflict in which people seek only to satisfy their own desires. This view stemmed from the fact that Hobbes was an egoist who believed that people are inherently selfish. One word to describe inherently is naturally, so Hobbes believed that people were naturally selfish. In all honesty, there are people today that live in a state of nature. Instead of working for what they want, they will go out and steal other people’s belongings and if it comes to it, they will kill for what they want. The pilot died leaving the boys alone on an abandoned island without adult supervision. Ralph, the oldest among the boys, was chosen as chief of the group. Ralph called a meeting to try to set some ground rules for everybody to go by to keep some sort of order amongst them. He gives them jobs to do like keeping the fire going to alert passing by ships that somebody was on the island, setting up shelter and others were to hunt for food to eat. Most of the boys got tired of doing the jobs that Ralph gave them and played around, not worrying about their tasks they were given. Eventually, Jack got tired of Ralph’s authority and rebels and starts his own group. By the near end of the movie, Jack has everybody in his group but Piggy and Ralph. Jack’s group begin to act like savages not obeying the rules and torturing each other. They kill two of the boys, Simon and Piggy. After Jack kills Piggy, they start hunting Ralph. Ralph hid near the castle rock until they started a fire trying to smoke him out. He runs toward the shore until he finally collapses on the beach where an officer had arrived with his ship to rescue the boys. I believe that Jack and his group did go into a state of nature knowing there was no grownups for them to answer too. I believe that Jack was rebellious probably with supervision, just worse without
