I’m interested in joining the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. I would love to join this organization, because I love what they stand for and what they have done for the world so far. They have done things as opening school in Haiti and Africa, Delta house in Africa, and many other things. One of the reason I want to join this prestigious organization is because they do stuff to better the country that I was born in, and everything that’s helping Haiti becomes a better country is something I have to at least try to be a part of. It will also help me get started with my plan on opening a youth center in Haiti.

The migration of my grandparents and parents, from a young age, cultivated a sense of determination in me to overcome obstacles. Arriving in Miami at age 5, I had to learned my third language, English, in order to attend school. I was determined to and successfully lost my accent and got tested into the gifted program after a year of school.

My interest in Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. sparked when I met Sheila Hudson. At the time I had no idea that she was an active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. Psychology was one of my earliest career interests dating back to high school. I would eventually follow my interest and pursue a college degree in this line of study where I obtained a 4.0 in all the courses that were in my major. I also was heavily involved in PSI Chi (The International Honors Society of Psychology) where I served as our chapter’s Vice President. It was due to this passion and success that I was offered a position as an undergraduate Teaching Assistant at SIU. I believe my success and experiences in psychology would allow me to be knowledgeable about the course content and the ability to be seen as a credible source of information to my
The more I don’t know, the more I know. The more I realize I don’t understand, the more I discover my desire to know more about psychology. My interest in educational psychology was triggered by my first experience in changing schools.
Being a health and fitness enthusiast I have always been interested in learning about how the mind works physically and emotionally, and in what ways the body reacts to various mental states is very intriguing. That is why I want to explore the mind and the essence of the human condition. We all question or try to make sense of our life; I believe that through its many perspectives, psychology has those answers. Psychology is accessible because not only is it a scientific study of thought and behaviour, it is also an art that can be applied by the individual to everyday life. I also believe we are all psychologists attempting to understand other people and ourselves.

Psychology is defined as “the scientific study of the mind and behavior” (Introduction to Psychology, 2015). Psychology provides an overview of biology and behavior, sensation and perception, learning, memory, intelligence, language, motivation, emotion, abnormal psychology, and therapy (PSY 102 Course Syllabus, 2018, pg 1). Because psychology allows for a better understanding of how the mind and body work, this knowledge can be beneficial for any field of study or career. The theoretical and practical understanding of the basics of psychology can help with decision-making, critical thinking, stress management, time management, better understanding of others, improving communication, and even achieving goals and objectives, all components that allow someone to be more successful throughout their life. Throughout this course I hope to gain a greater understanding of historical and theoretical perspectives of human behavior and development (PSY 102 Course Syllabus, 2018, pg 2).

Besides viewing this process as a foundation for future knowledge and abilities, I have been anticipating this stage of gaining deeper and professional knowledge in psychology for a long time. To summarize, this goal is elicited from my passion and enthusiasm for psychology, to remain focused throughout these three years, instead of gaining fame or impress others. After graduation, I want to engage in a job related to psychology, allowing me to serve others by applying the knowledge learnt. It may not need to be anything very great; I just hope to contribute to the society’s wellbeing, whether it is in the clinical setting, corporate world or any other aspects. Most importantly, I hope to raise awareness and acceptance towards mental disorders.
