The Catcher in the Rye Holden Caulfield gets kicked out of a prestigious boarding school and is too scared to tell his parents. He is a boy who wants to be looked at as great and big, but he has no real friends and instead spends his time calling everyone phony’s and not dealing with his issues. He is extremely smart but spends his brains on getting a smoke or a drink, the story shows a boy finding himself and being somewhat ok with him. In real school and everyday lives of a teenager seem to be very similar to Holden’s life which is why it should definitely not be banned in school. Holden’s life and his choices have a lot to teach us and people especially those who are still in high school, from the substance abuse to low self-esteem. It …show more content…
“If I failed at least I wanted to” “if I try and fail then I’m no worse than those Phony’s” Holden wanted full control over his life at all times. He went as far as to give up everything he wanted or needed in his life to make sure he was in control. If he had learned or been taught that power isn’t everything he might be a very different boy. Everything Holden did was related, his low self-esteem fueled his need for drinks and his need for drinks fueled his need for all the power. If you only look at the negative about a person that’s all they become and that’s what happened with Holden, his teachers thought he was a screw up his parents thought he just didn’t care. So at some point he didn’t he become a mess up he stopped caring. I mean if someone was constantly telling you how bad you were at writing you aren’t going to get better, if people keep telling you, you’re stupid you eventually feel stupid and then act on it. At alpine we have a four to one ratio which is for every negative you have, you earn four positives. It’s so you don’t completely give up and you see people do see the good things. If Holden’s teachers had said hey you’re good at writing, maybe he would have written his emotion or whatever just so he could have a passion. In real life it’s a little more complicated, teachers aren’t always going to have time to talk to every student about what they are good at, but it Catcher in the Rye …show more content…
Anyone could be going through this exact thing but by taking away that right and freedom for someone to read something is absolute crap. Anyone can find anything wrong with something or not “healthy” for kids. Untimely it’s up to perception if you have lots of trouble with drug abuse and you read this book you can either say I’m going to smoke every day because Holden does this and blah blah my mom and this and that’s up to you, or you can see how this affected Holden in a negative way and ask for help. The problem is anyone can see negative in anything I could give you a child’s books and there could be references that might be ok for a kid but a four year old is not going to think about sex they are going to see a princess climbing a tower. If we say this book is banned because so and so says this, that is what we will see because when negative is pointed out that’s all one can think about. In the third censorship essay it says we already see lots of “bad things” portrayed in a good way. Movies, shows, ads and music have so much drinking and smoking in a good way so we are already going to see it. But at least for me seeing it from Holden’s life is a lot more eye opening than Justin Bieber getting drunk on a side walk. But if you want to protect your kids from everything go for it, but you going to have to put them in a bubble and lock them
