This shows a physical as well as a behavioral traits of Holden. He has bad lungs because he used to smoke, which resulted in him getting tuberculosis. He says that he’s pretty help even though after just running a little bit he has to catch his breath. This shows how he has a hard time admitting to weaknesses even if its is just a small thing like this. He also is really tall, as he grew 6 and a half inches in just last year. It shows how Holden is a very genuine, caring person, that can care a lot about people that he believes are genuine as well. He is willing to pay for the nun’s food and give them a donation, and genuinely enjoys the conversation. At the same time, Holden has trouble trusting anyone, in general. Even though Holden is willing to give them money, even if he enjoys the conversation, he still stays guarded, afraid that they might ask if he is a catholic. This shows how holden is also a character who doesn't trust people. This shows how holden is really neurotic. Holden takes this girl, Sally, out on a date. When Holden starts ranting about life, and Sally tries to defend things like college, Holden gets mad and frustrated at Sally, and ends up calling her a pain in the ass. In the past, cursing at a girl was unheard of, and for some who, throughout the book was a smooth talker, this shows how Holden’s behavior can be really erratic and unusual. Although I have been describing Holden as mature, he still isnt fully mature. As a teen, he still really doesnt understands sex.
