When Does Holden Fit Into Society

Although Holden fails and can't seem to fit in right, he does try and want to fit into society. In the famous controversial novel by J.D. Salinger, titled “The CATCHER in The RYE” Holden tries to fit into Society by acting or saying what he thinks is right, and shows that he wants and has emotions. In the story, Salinger wrote, “I know he does, I said. Then I started shooting the old crap around a little bit. ‘He adapts himself very well to things. He really does. I mean he knows how to adapt himself." (62). Holden meets a lady on a train to New York after leaving his school, Pency, she notices a Pencey sticker on one of his Gladstones and asks him if he goes there and knows her son, Ernest. Holden tells her what he thinks she would want to hear, instead of the truth to try and make him and her son look good as if Holden is fitting into Society by faking and showing kindness towards the lady. Another example of Holden showing these emotions and wanting to fit in, is in Salinger’s Novel, “The Catcher in The Rye”, Holden states to Sally, “why don't you go on over and give him a big soul kiss, if you know him? He’ll enjoy it.” (141). During this part of the book Holden is hanging out with his old friend Sally, who he likes and thinks is cute, and he gets mad and says a dumb thing which is what is quoted above. Salinger, The Main character Holden wants to fit into society by posing as what he thinks is cool and or right. In the novel, Holden tells the reader, “I got up from the bed like I was going down to the can or something, and then I tried to sock him, with all my might…” (Salinger 49). At this time in the story Holden is talking to his roommate Stradlater about his upcoming date with a girl that Holden is secretly in love with and misses, Stradlater is getting ready for the date shaving and brushing his teeth and all when suddenly Holden gets up and decides to try and sock him in the face and horse around. Holden is trying to fit in with him and act tough by horsing around but does it in the wrong moment and Stradlater isn't having it. Holden continues to act tuff even though he tells us he is shaking and scared. Even though Holden didn't do it right he was trying to fit in with Stradlater, if he didn't want to fit into society he wouldn't want to try and fit in with a “cool” kid or really anyone.
