Holden caulfield in the catcher in the rye plays a character who is constantly addicted to things that are not for people his age such as smoking drinking, alcohol, or even imagening sexual intercorse. Throughout the story Holden is often seen smoking drinking, lying and more of his addictive habits this is most likely because of his block in his transition between adulthood and childhood, which was stopped due to the death of one of his closest family members allie. The first time we see Holden smoking is in the dorm to annoy his roommate and thinks “ I lay on my bed and lit a cigarette. You weren't allowed to smoke in the dorm, but you could do it late at night when everybody was asleep or out and nobody could smell the smoke. Besides, I did it to annoy Stradlater.” on page (47). This is the second addictive things he clearly states and is the first time seeing him doing something that is a strongly adult common thing to do. Throughout the entire book holden is often seen smoking and he even said that he went through an entire pack in a single day which he mentions when he meets phoebe and “says got some cigarettes out of the box on the table and stuck some in my pocket. I was all out.” this obviously shows that Holden has a strong addiction towards cigarettes which is even more unsafe for a young teen as holden. The first time we see Holden drinking (or suggesting to drink) is on page (64) when he suggests a cocktail to Ernest Morrow’s mother which she declines. This shows how Holden is his unwilling journey to adulthood but has also embraced some parts of which he enjoys but also as a child he does what he wants without following societies rules (not to be confused with a teen who ignores the rules of
