Mr. Holmes had intentions that shocked Chicago, just a few years after Jack the Ripper terrorized London. Mr. Holmes is a serial killer from 1893 who lured his victims from the World Columbian Exposition who is being compared/contrasted to Jack the Ripper. Jack the Ripper is a serial killer who terrorized London in the year of 1888. Mr. Holmes and Jack the Ripper have different modus operandi of committing their murders but, according to research both could be the same person.

Holmes carried out his murders without raising the suspicion of the police. “”Oh, she’s gone away to get married,” Holmes said, as if nothing could have interested him less.”” (Erik Larson, 2003, pg.187) comments Erik Larson. Mr. Holmes completely dismisses the concern Mrs. Lawrence has for Edeline. Mrs. Lawrence has only stronger notion to believe Mr. Holmes has killed Edeline because she saw him carry out a trunk about for feet long. The trunk was fairly new and was carried out of his building with some difficulty. It was shipped off in an express wagon. She realized while pressing Mr. Holmes ,who waves away any question she throws at him, that Edeline last days were all spent at Mr. Holmes’ building. Mr. Holmes would marry his victims then take all their money. He promises everything in the world then a few weeks later he she would disappear. His victims would be put in a vault with chemicals or in a kiln. “Some days the halls the halls were suffused with a caustic scent, as of a cleanser applied to liberally, other days with a silvery medicinal odor, as if a dentist were at work somewhere in the building easing a customer into a deep scent” reports Erik Larson. (Erik Larson, 2003,pg 256). Mr Holmes used chemicals to make his victims fall into a deep sleep in his office which had secret passages through out the building.
