Imagine sitting on the sidewalk. It’s dark outside and cold. All that’s there is a blanket to keep warm. People have been out here for months hoping that one day someone will be kind enough to give them money so they can buy food. People spend their days walking up and down the streets looking for businesses that need help, but none of them let them in because they are homeless. It’s been three days since they’d had their last meal. At this point, they would be happy to just have a little something. As they are walking down the street they find a food bank. They are so delighted that they start to cry. Suddenly, they walk in but no volunteers appear. They lose all hope. Most people are homeless. After all, they can’t afford to pay for housing options because their job doesn’t pay enough. Some homeless people have dealt with substance abuse in the past which has made it to where they can’t work. But the greatest problem that homeless people face is food insecurity. Food insecurity is a growing problem around the world. Nearly 38 million people around the world struggle with food insecurity because they can’t afford to pay for the proper nutrients that they and their families need (“About Hunger and Homelessness”). Nourish KC is a nonprofit that not only feeds homeless people but also provides them with culinary classes to help them learn to cook to help with food insecurity (“Nourish KC”). These classes that Nourish KC provides also prepare you to go into a culinary career. But how could this be a good solution if food banks lack volunteers? While Nourish KC might not be the perfect solution, it provides enough resources to be the best solution. Most food banks struggle because people don’t know they exist but Nourish KC is a social food bank, meaning that they put themselves out there and connect with the community. Not only does Nourish KC connect with the community but they also have a website and social media to help them have a closer connection with the community to help encourage those to come and volunteer.
This non-profit organization takes donations so even if you can’t volunteer you can donate to help them provide the food and the supplies needed to provide the homeless with cooking classes. These donations are a big part of what makes NourishKC successful. If NourishKC didn’t accept donations their nonprofit would not be very successful. Donations to NourishKC are the easiest way to help give back
