This opinion piece, titled “why are we really ashamed about Melbourne’s homeless crisis?” written by Jamila Rizvi for the herald sun, takes on a concerned tone while discussing the issue of homelessness in Melbourne. Various persuasive techniques have been used to make the reader question their belief. The article is aimed at people who are around the homeless often, tourists coming for the Australian Open and commuters in the CBD. This piece makes us question why we are actually ashamed of the homeless in Melbourne.
While circumstances can vary, an individual’s first choice is rarely to choose homelessness due to the inability to afford housing or other unforeseen circumstances. The support of friends, family, and community programs/shelters are first suggestions when a person becomes displaced. When these suggestions become inadequate, living on the streets is the next favorable/affordable option. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, on a night in January of 2015, there were 564,708 people homeless in the United States (para 3).
I weaved through the busy streets of Melbourne trying to find my way. Many people filled the city, businessmen, workers, retailers and homeless. They were ignored by everyone who passed them, no one bore to even look at them. I myself too walked past, and slowed down. Their faces, covered with distress and great agony, they were pleading for help.
Many would argue that allowing beggars, rough sleepers and public drug users to camp on our streets tarnishes Melbourne’s reputation as the ‘most liveable city in the world’. It makes the city shabby and unwelcome for visitors and regular users of the CBD. However, the fact that there is homeless individuals in the first place, opposes that statement. Think about it, if Melbourne were to be the ‘most liveable city’, then why is it that when we walk around the streets of Melbourne, there is an inevitable number of hopeless individuals despondently begging for help? These people should not be made to suffer any longer, especially at the hands of the people who are elected to protect their welfare.

A 16-year-old Australian man view of home is disoriented because he is unable to fit in the social formations of that society.
Currently, homelessness has become one of the major social problems in Australia. It is common to see homeless people sleep at street sides in major cities like Sydney and Melbourne. According to the latest statistics from the ABS Census of Housing and Population, there are 105,237 people in Australia who are homeless at present (Homelessness Australia, 2016). In other words, there is one person who is homeless in every 200 people in Australia. What is worse, the rate of homelessness has been growing in most states in Australia in the past few years.
Although homelessness is caused by many things, homeless people are usually labeled as homeless. But there are types of homelessness. One type of homelessness is Situational or Transitional homelessness. This is when someone is forced into homelessness because of uncontrollable circumstances such as losing a job, important material lost, lost of a main breadwinner (Father, husband, wife) etc. The second type of homelessness is Episodic or cyclical homelessness.
The social issue that I picked is homelessness. Homelessness is a real issue, even if we don’t always see it. Homelessness doesn’t just mean you don’t have a roof over your head, it means you don’t have food, a good education, a healthy lifestyle, or a warm place to sleep every night. Some people don’t think very highly about homeless people, they think that it's their fault that they are where they are in life. Homelessness is going to end up becoming a bigger problem.

Homelessness in Aboriginal population is in need of programs and services to make a change in the lives of those affected. The number has been estimated for homelessness in Canada is between 15,000 to 300,000 individuals experience homelessness in Canada (Segaert, 2012).
Imagine feeling lost and not knowing what to do or where to go. You spend each night in the harsh weather on a bench, which you call your shelter. Over the past years, there's been a rapid increase in the number of homeless people. Detailed plans to tackle homelessness in Canadian cities are having little to no impact on reducing the homelessness problem. Most of these homeless people didn't choose to be homeless but it's mostly due to mental health issues, drugs addictions and mainly due to lack of shelter.
Homelessness is one the most ignored problems in the United States with citizen and politician. Homeless people are walked by and ignored. Nobody ever thinks that they will be homeless. Due to the economy, people live paycheck to paycheck making house payments very difficult. Most people will want to believe most homeless people are drug addicts or alcoholics, but most people will be surprise to know that it is no all true.
The homeless problem costs society millions of dollars, predominantly through medical bills. Society assumes homelessness is normally distributed. However, that is not the case. Homelessness follows a power-law distribution, meaning the problem is not concentrated in the middle but rather at one extreme. This distribution pattern is also evident in police violence allegations.

We must remember that they are people too, and some time or another in life we all need help, even then homeless.
