One of the largest issues the country is facing today is homelessness, and almost nothing is being done to stop its growth. Jeannette Walls was once a victim of being homeless and poor. She wrote about what it was like growing up poor and always on the move in her memoir entitled The Glass Castle. She tells about her experiences travelling across the country, never finding a permanent home. She often encountered obstacles such as always being hungry, being shot at, and in some cases sexually abused.

Homelessness is an unsolved issue occurring day to day, worldwide. What the main focus of this essay will be are the homeless youth in Canada dealing with drug addiction and substance use. It is a significant social justice issue in Canada. Within our community people are increasingly aware of the sight of youth sleeping in parks, asking for money and sitting on sidewalks. Youth homelessness is caused by tragic life occurrences such as abuse, illness or unemployment, while many falsely assume homelessness is a choice.

This made me feel upset that we don't have facilities/places for people who have housing troubles. Homelessness is one the most ignored problems in the United States with citizen and politician. Homeless people are walked by and ignored. Nobody ever thinks that they will be homeless. Due to the economy, people live paycheck to paycheck making house payments very difficult. Most people will want to believe most homeless people are drug addicts or alcoholics, but most people will be surprise to know that it is no all true.

There are twelve hundred and twenty-nine people experiencing homelessness in the region and unfortunately 29% of the homeless population is made up of 355 young people (Queensland Youth Housing Coalition, 2016). The Social Ecological Model, Social Justice and Ottawa Charter are frameworks that will help provide better understanding of the issue. They also assist in creating a diffusion action plan to fend against the issues.
Homelessness is a complex social issue with a variety of economic and social factors such as poverty, lack of affordable housing, physical and mental health, addictions, and community/family breakdowns. Homelessness has increased its number by at least a 1% since last year, reached nearly 554,000 people who are living in harsh conditions. The government and its policies/bans only harm the homeless instead of being beneficial to them. With the “City wide bans on camping in public have increased [along with the]… city wide bans on sleeping in public…, sitting or lying down in particular places… [and,] bands on sleeping in vehicles have [all] increased”(Wiltz).
Most temporary residence shelters do not have the resources nor do they have the space to allow the population to stay during the daytime. This leaves thousands of people without somewhere to stay during the day, including during winter months in cold states. The portion of the homeless population that doesn’t have a temporary living facility available to them is forced to sleep in unsafe public areas like street corners or parks. Homelessness impacts a majority of our population in today’s society in some way, shape or form. Some people have experienced the stress of homelessness itself while others have loved ones who are currently suffering or have previously suffered from homelessness.
The issue of homelessness in America has been evident since the early 1600’s. Across the country men, women and children spend their nights on the streets not knowing when or if they will ever find a permanent home. States and federal officials or city councils have tried to alleviate or at least reduce the number of homeless over the last several decades at a city, state or national level but it continues to be an ongoing problem. There is a multitude of factors that account for the growing homeless population that affects each state in the country differently. Though there are many contributing factors that contribute to the amount of people living on the street at any given night in the U.S.
Finally, another major issue involved with homelessness is the safety of the populations of homeless individuals. Accomodation for the masses is a major issue when one is confronted with the issue of homelessness. Where are all of these people meant to stay, if not the streets? One answer comes in shelters, but the current shelters available in most cities are often lackluster and not the best places to stay. “The women noted that shelters currently available lack the necessary requirements of basic accommodation,” (Walsh et al.) found a study in the Qualitative Report called “Characteristics of Home: Perspectives of Women Who are Homeless.”
Every night in the United States, more than 550,000 people have no home to return to. According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), last year our country experienced the first increase in homelessness rates in a decade. The issue of homelessness is persistent and continues to ruin the lives of many Americans today, and no solution has been able to holistically address the problem. In recent discussions about assistance to the homeless in America, government intervention has been a controversial topic. On one hand, some argue that those in need should learn to rely on themselves, and that private nonprofits are more effective than federal programs.
First of all, the majority of authors felt concerned, hopeful and sympathy towards homelessness people and some of them think that homeless people are a victim of circumstances which includes the gambling, impact of their family, joblessness, poverty and also disabilities. Even homelessness may be a bad thing for the majority of people around the world, but it probably has some positive side of thinking. Even so, I have realized that there is seem to be one main element in order to save the homeless person. The government should help homeless people get back on their feet. They also need to make sure that homeless people don’t abuse systems such as housing and security.
