I went on vacation to Toronto, Canada (a BIG city), and saw many helpless people laying on the side of the street. This made me feel upset that we don't have facilities/places for people who have housing troubles. When we have more homeless shelters/supportive housing, it helps people stay stably housed and many people prefer supportive housing over shelters because it provides more resources which they may need. An expert in this field named Stephen Poulin states that people who stay in shelters save about 60% on systems like water and electricity. We should

Firstly, shelters help to improve health for those living in poverty with mental or health problems. Research tells us that supportive housing reduces the amount of viruses in people’s veins who suffer from HIV/ AIDS. By doing this, it lowers the number of people who pass away because of HIV/ AIDS. These people who now have access to housing are 63% less likely to die according to Sandra K. Schwarz, and many other studies agree with this claim. Many homeless families suffer from disabling conditions and when they move into a shelter, they get much better and it helps them with life in general. Secondly, homeless shelters help families stick together. There are many families in the world that struggle with homelesness. Offering them a safe home to live in reduces the placements in foster care. By providing shelters for families, a large percent don’t have to send their kids away to foster care. Lastly, having a safe stable place to live gives people with disabilities, health conditions and other disadvantages/struggles a head start towards recovery. When people live without supportive housing, it makes health conditions much worse. Many people like this may not have a place to live, and have access only to emergency rooms. When we have more homeless shelters available, there are less placements in foster care/orphanages. It also helps by improving health by decreasing the percentile of dying from health conditions/aids. Lastly it gives people with disadvantages a head start towards recovery by giving them a stable place to stay with the resources they need.
