Hometown Hero: How Cristo is Innocent of Santiago’s Murder
During Chronicle for A Death Foretold most of the characters in the novel are in some way related to the murder of Santiago Nasar. Although many of the characters in the novel indirectly contributed to Santiago’s death, other characters helped try to prevent it. In the novel, Gabriel Garcia Marquez portrays the character Cristo Bedoya as innocent from the murder of Santiago. Cristo Bedoya was determined to prevent Santiago's death and tried his best to warn him before his pursuers reached him. ‘They’re looking for him to kill him’” (Marquez 105). Cristo Bedoya shows his innocence because at this time he is the only person in the town looking for Santiago. Cristo’s self-determination to search and warn Santiago of his pursuers shows that he has no intention for Santiago to be killed, and he wants to save the life of an innocent man. Cristo Bedoya is trying to save the life of a friend and fellow town member that everyone else seems to be ignoring. In an attempt to save Santiago’s life, Cristo realized that he would need a weapon to defend himself, “‘Suddenly I thought that he’d come back so that he could go out armed,’ Cristo Bedoya told me (...) He found the Magnum in the drawer of the night table (...) ‘I’d never shot a gun, but I decided to take the revolver and bring it to Santiago Nasar’” (Marquez 106). Cristo reflects the Columbian lifestyle at the time, demonstrating how the government rarely enforced the law and it was up to local town members to prevent crime.
