Around 1830, the number of homeless children in New York City suddenly grew. By 1850, there were an estimated 30,000 homeless children living on the streets of New York City. At the time, New York City’s population was only 500,000. This increase in homeless children was due to many things. Some children living on the streets were orphans due to their parents dying from diseases, others had parents that just couldn’t take care of them for a multitude of reasons.
People become homeless due to other factors such as unemployment, poor family relations, and mental health problems. To begin, one of the factors that may cause one to be homeless is a lack of a job. Once someone loses their job, it can

Going without a steady job, use of transportation, and everyday electricity, was quite the struggle for people back then.
The 1920’s was an uprising decade known as “the roaring twenties”. Big changes came with the 1920’s, new fashions, new technologies. Women began to have more rights, and Prohibition. Many People called the 1920’s the “age of excess” because American people could afford and buy anything they wanted. The 1920’s made america what it is today.
Homeless has been around for a long time. Three different points in history I will discuss are, Pre-Great Depression, The Great Depression, and The 2008 Recession. Homeless has always been apart of America’s History. It has dated back centuries ago. It has also affected much of today’s society.
People often tend to view the 1920’s as a prosperous time period in American history, American citizens capitalizing from the flourishing economy, by living lavish lifestyles, obnoxiously massive parties. However, this wasn’t the lifestyle for every American in the United States. This was an exception to only the wealthy and elite Americans that controlled markets and major business in the economy. Whether that is a legitimate or illegitimate business, these Americans were profited vastly.
Homelessness dates back to 1640, according to Homelessness History. In the mid eighteen hundreds, homeless people were acknowledged as “sturdy beggars”. The sturdy beggars were found in every corner of the colonial towns. Back then, Baltimore and Philadelphia had the highest population of homeless people. There was one big problem about homelessness at that time.
Homeless youth are always dealing with poor nutrition, victimization, substance use, and abuse. Unfortunately the services provided are very limited and cannot help a huge chunk of the homeless youth. Homeless youth experience more substance abuse and drug addiction than non-homeless youth, this causes them to be mentally unstable and unable to be a functioning member of society. There are many temporary services provided such as shelters, drop-ins, meal programs, literacy improvements, and counselling programs; although these are available and there to help the youth, they are all flawed in their own ways. What the government does not take into consideration is the long term solutions to put youth in poverty to an end.

Some people may think that homelessness is a trouble because they assume that the individual is lazy and just wants life to be handed to them. Further assumptions are made about drugs causing individuals to become homeless. While that sometimes happens, many times it is the other way around. Individuals who have become homeless feel helpless and give into the release from their reality that drugs can give them (Thompson, 2011). People that do not consider factors outside of the individual are overlooking the breakdown within many institutions including school and the family that could lead an individual to become homeless.
In The Great Depression America in the 1930s by T. H. Watkins, The Great Depression, this happens during the 1930s. It was the biggest, deepest, and most known depression of the 20th century. This was a start for anger movement a cross nations. It started in the united states of America, after the loss or damage which happened to the stock prices that began around September 4, 1929. Everyone in the country was hurt to some degree by onset of that depression; it was a period of class conflict.
As time goes on, the rate of homelessness rises as the population rises. Homelessness then was mostly caused by a family’s history of being homeless, drug abuse, mental disorders, and tyrannical leaders forcing his people into poverty. In modern times, several organizations are now trying to end homelessness by building cheaper housing projects more affordable to the poor and homeless shelters; these projects usually cost a fair amount of money.
Homelessness is one the most ignored problems in the United States with citizen and politician. Homeless people are walked by and ignored. Nobody ever thinks that they will be homeless. Due to the economy, people live paycheck to paycheck making house payments very difficult. Most people will want to believe most homeless people are drug addicts or alcoholics, but most people will be surprise to know that it is no all true.
Public Policy: Financial Aid (FAFSA) Information Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a mean of financial aid available for future college students that have financial circumstances. Typically, FAFSA is usually available for families that have low-income. The United States Department of Education is the provider of this financial aid that students may fill out a free application to receive financial support. The financial aid is also available for parents whom may are trying to re-register for college courses.
Homelessness is a significant complex societal problem. Many people think homelessness is an individual problem, but I think society has a large factor on why people become homeless. Individuals who are homeless are not lazy like most of society thinks. These people are struggling with societal problems such as living costs and mostly cannot support themselves financially. In my eyes, Homelessness is a factor of societal forces such as high cost of housing and living and also society having failed systems to support people who are stuck in these sorts of situations.
