The main reason for homelessness still hasn’t changed, yet they are seen differently throughout the years. The main reason for people being homeless is still due to the lack of money. Today hobos are often seen as someone who is lazy or drunk. Just about everyone who thinks that probably doesn’t know their story behind how they got there.
Throughout history bias and tunnel mindedness has been demonstrated by all, whether it be during the holocaust, wars, famous speakers, religion disputes, terrorist attacks and more. Almost everyone, including America, tends to tell their side of the story, like we are always the heros. When in reality it is virtually impossible to be correct 100% of the time. This quote demonstrates this perfectly.
Modern homelessness in New York City emerged during the 1970’s; it was not new occurrence to the city because there was a great deal of homelessness during the Great Depression. However, homelessness was never as great as it is today. In the 1970’s New York experienced an increase in the homeless population. Although many people became homeless for a variety of reasons, the lack of affordable housing was the primary factor. Many of the city's homeless population were individuals who suffer from mental illnesses or who were substance abusers.
One of the most world-changing moments in the world at the end of the 1920's was the Great Depression. Although some might have benefited from it, the Great Depression was also the event that caused the economy to become depressed due to many changes in the world. The Great Depression caused extreme poverty, severe number of unemployed people and homelessness. In picture two, it shows how there's a homeless man sitting there with a little baby.
The Great Depression caused mass homelessness during this time period due to the loss of employment and savings. These people used the ever growing railway system to move from town to town. These people would come to be known as “hobos”. Homelessness during the Great Depression Depression is a big part of history because it was a dangerous time for the hobos because how bad the living condition were.

While personal factors, such as social relationships and family, can also be put under pressure by structural forces such as poverty. Homelessness came as a national issue in the 1870s and into the 20th Century, The Great Depression of the 1930s caused a horrible epidemic of poverty, hunger and homelessness. I am witnessing a shift from the image of ‘homelessness’ being a physically dirty, pan handling, poor, uneducated individual who does not have a physical home for shelter. Initially, I failed to recognize that ‘homelessness’ can be a temporary state on can live in. Not all homeless people are homeless by “choice”, sometimes people are homeless by “force”.
As time goes on, the rate of homelessness rises as the population rises. Homelessness then was mostly caused by a family’s history of being homeless, drug abuse, mental disorders, and tyrannical leaders forcing his people into poverty. In modern times, several organizations are now trying to end homelessness by building cheaper housing projects more affordable to the poor and homeless shelters; these projects usually cost a fair amount of money.
Today the homeless have much more of a struggle in comparison to the past for many reasons such as being kicked out of areas; because of them having no choice but to “loiter” due to not having a place to sleep for the night. The homeless were allowed to live
The issue of homelessness in America has been evident since the early 1600’s. Across the country men, women and children spend their nights on the streets not knowing when or if they will ever find a permanent home. States and federal officials or city councils have tried to alleviate or at least reduce the number of homeless over the last several decades at a city, state or national level but it continues to be an ongoing problem. There is a multitude of factors that account for the growing homeless population that affects each state in the country differently. Though there are many contributing factors that contribute to the amount of people living on the street at any given night in the U.S.
During the recent years homelessness has increased eminently. Although homelessness is not a new phenomenon it has become a huge social issue in today’s society. In urban areas homelessness is visible by the masses but ignored by society’s negative perception. Characterized as unstable individuals, alcoholics and criminals by society, these negative stereotypes have only escalate the issue. Homeless can occur at any stage of life for multitude of factors.
