The history of homosexuality has been plagued with violence and intolerance among the American people. Americans view the thought of homosexuality as something alien to them. The history of homosexuals runs all the way back to the earliest beginnings of our great nation. Homosexuals have been involved in shaping our country from the beginning. Some people speculate that President Abraham Lincoln and Eleanor Roosevelt may have been gay. Even today, Americans still exhibit uncertainty about the overall acceptability of homosexuality in America today, and a large number of Americans still believe that homosexuality should not be acceptable or legal. But there have been changes in these stances over time.
In December 1924, The Society for Human Rights was founded in Chicago. This society was the first gay rights organization of its kind and the oldest in America. President Eisenhower signed executive order 10450 that banned homosexuals from working in the federal government or any private contractor associated with the U.S government. The executive order cataloged gays as security risks along with drugs and alcohol. Then some good news, in 1962, Illinois repealed its sodomy law and legalized homosexuality, making it the first state to do so.
