The novel Geography Club, begins with the protagonist Russell Middlebrow waiting for a reply from the internet chat room for people seeking romantic partners. While Middlebrow makes it clear that he would like the meetings to be discreet, because he doesn't want anyone to know he is homosexual. On his way to meet a boy form the chat room named 72Finns, he stumbles upon a popular boy from his high school. While after a brief discussion the popular boy reveals that he is the boy from the chat room that Middlebrow has been talking to.While on a school field trip Middlebrow sits next to best friend, Gunner, who does not know Middlebrow’s true sexuality, and they begin to talk about the attractive girls on the bus. The boys are confused because the room is titled Geography Club, and Min reveal that she named this room to prevent people from joining or dining out that the club is actually a secret LGBT support group. Middlebrow joins the football team to explain why he and Kevin is spending so much time together. After a date at the bowling alley with Trish, she tries to have sex with him, but he tells her that he wants his first time to be special so they don't have sex. The next night Middlebrow starts in in his first football game, and wins the game for the team. Further, during dinner with Kevin his dad reveals that his uncle is gay and will be coming to town with his boyfriend. Also, Kevin’s father appears to be very open about his uncle’s sexuality.
