Honor Killings Affecting Women In Middle East Countries

The negative phenomenon affecting woman in middle east countries which I am interested in is honour killings. Honour killings are vicious murders of wives, sisters, and even daughters to maintain the honour within a family.As stated in the “Crimes of Honour” video, “blood cleanses honour”. Honour killings can occur due to many circumstances such as, the loss of virginity before marriage, running away from a family, not fulfilling the duties of a wife, refusing an arranged marriage, and even being raped. Strict traditions claimed to be based off religion are enabling honour killings to remain society and continue to make women inferior to men. These honour killings are impacting women on numerous different levels. To begin, women become more subordinated to men due to the fear resulting in the honour killings. Women facing this dilemma also begin to feel emotions such as loneliness and worthlessness. When women begin to feel hopelessness, they become more emotionally dependant on their males partners, resulting in male superiority. Honour killings occur more in the lower class portions of society of these regions. Within the families of which these honour killings occur, women are seen as property of the family. This is problematic because the women do not then have control over their choices regarding partners as well as other issues such as the way they dress. In addition, women are influenced by societies values and beliefs. To expand, women are held to a certain standard and are supposed to complete certain tasks and role which include caring for children.
