Honors Colloquium Reflection

In one of our earliest Honors Colloquium discussions, we were asked to consider the purpose of a Liberal Arts education, as well as the priorities and concerns confounding the millennial mindset, especially in the present sociopolitical climate. In my initial reflection, I merely scratched the surface in what I surmised from the Liberal Arts chronology, and what it carries to the table for us, as students at Saint Michael’s College. Whilst it has its own imperfections, I said, there is no better way for us to attain the wider breadth of knowledge, reserved not simply to our respective fields of study, but allowing for furthered collaboration across the board. It is my opinion, which has been reinforced if considering that a semester of the Honors Colloquium has now concluded, that the best approach to a more multifaceted style of learning, is through this manner of productive discourse, where everyone brings their uniquely informed knowledge to bear. For me, this course managed to strike at the heart of what makes the Liberal Arts curriculum not only preferred, but altogether necessary. Though we were rarely, if ever, coming from the same place, it was always from broader discussion, naturally bolstered through small groups, in which we were able to create the foundation for well-rounded thinking that would prove harder to achieve by ourselves. Furthermore, cultural event requirements, offered outlets for us to pursue interests and opportunities we may have otherwise neglected to take advantage of. In this sort of way, the Honors Colloquium brought together all the aspects of a Liberal Arts education for us to
