In this essay I will be talking about how educated Wes Moore and Arthur Agee have in common with their families. In Hoop Dreams and The Other Wes Moore these two kids went thru a lot in life that brought them down but there was always something that kept them going to accomplishing their dreams. Arthur Agee grew up poor and was tough for him and his family. Beginning of his life he grew up watching his dad beat his mom and taking drugs, one of the toughest thing for a child to witness at a young age.
The title of my book is Sacred Hoops. The author of Sacred Hoops is Phil Jackson. Sacred Hoops is told through the eyes of Phil Jackson who is one of the most successful and greatest coaches of all time. This book is an inside look at the higher wisdom of teamwork. It shows that basketball is not all about basketball, and seen more through the spiritual side of it.
“Deciding to Go Pro,” chapter 11 is about how deciding to go a pro and discovering the importance of fundamentals. The authors use the example of Michael Jordan’s accomplishments. Pros like Michael Jordan never settle for staying. They work to become even better and they just focus on accomplishing all of their goals. “The battle you are going through is not fueled by the words or actions of others; it is fueled by the mind that gives it importance” – Shannon L. Alder. The novel, Hoops by Walter Dean Myers, chronicles the life of Lonnie Jackson– a high school student from Harlem with an impressive talent for playing basketball. Lonnie’s goal in life is more than just to become one of the best players to ever hit the court. Lonnie wishes to create a new life for himself– one that is free from the struggles of Harlem streets.
Being a professional athlete in any sport is something that takes hard work and dedication. The National Basketball League is the home to hundreds of players that have come from high school, college, and even from across the world. In recent years, there has been a big debate on whether these players should go to college or not before going into the NBA. In the article, “The Case for Getting Schooled”, David Gardner says that all of these players should attend college before starting their careers in the National Basketball Association. Gardner’s claim that basketball players should first go to college is flawed because a player might be good enough already to go into the NBA right away, players will play with better talent in the NBA, and
**Hoop Dreams: Chasing Basketball Dreams in Chicago** *Hoop Dreams* is a powerful documentary film directed by Steve James that was released in 1994. It tells the real-life story of two African American teenagers, William Gates and Arthur Agee, who dream of becoming professional basketball players. They live in Chicago, and the film follows them through their high school years as they face many challenges and obstacles. The movie shows not only their basketball journeys, but also the struggles they encounter in their personal lives, making it an inspiring and eye-opening story.
The Untold Truth Between The NBA and Royce White Sam Riches, in the article, How the NBA Failed Royce White (2017), explains that the NBA missed out on a potential star in Royce White by failing to provide a mental health protocol for players and only focusing on the money granted to players. Riches supports his claim through his use of anecdotes and pathos. The purpose of this piece is to show that there is a lack of mental health treatment in the NBA in order to inform readers on the money making over the well-being of the players’ care. Riches makes great use of anecdotes to further extend his claim as to how the NBA failed Royce White.
The Movie I chose to review was a documentary named Hoop Dreams. It follows the lives of two star basketball players, Arthur Agee and William Gates, raised in two very different environments. In the documentary director Steve James and co-film makers Frederick Marx and Peter Gilbert follow Arthur and William for five years filming their aspirations to make it to the pros. This movie is relevant to the course because of the popular culture items that are included in the movie. I think the majority of black kids grew up wanting to play basketball or be a professional athlete in some aspect.

Have you ever read a book that you are always eager to read, and never wanting to avert your eyes from the book? That’s how I would describe my time reading the book Night Hoops by Carl Deuker. Although I don’t like to read regularly, Night Hoops by Carl Deuker was one of the greatest books I have ever read. I had many things that I liked about the book and many times I felt connected to the main character Nick in the book There were a few things that I didn’t like about the book. The book is about a high school sophomore boy named Nick Abbot who wants to prove that he is good enough to be on the varsity basketball team all the while dealing with his parents' divorce, his eccentric neighbor Trent, and his ineffectual brother Scott.

But at first Trent seems to resist and says he doesn’t need help. He ends up running out every night with his brother to get into some trouble.
It’s very, very hard to win an NBA title. There is zero parity in the NBA, and it’s a big issue for the the league. With the way that the league is presently constituted, it’s very difficult for teams to build sustained success. That said, it’s better to be in the “tank” like Philly, LA or even Minnesota than be in NBA “purgatory” like Toronto or the Atlanta Hawks. The Toronto’s and Atlanta’s, as currently constructed, will never win a title, and it’s probably the league’s fault.
Why is it that the people who care the most about you hate to see you fail? Do they feel your pain? Even though they may not physically feel what you are going through they do understand that failure is rough. They know how much it hurts to accept a loss and they understand just how bad it aches because everyone feels the all too real sting of failure.
Air ball— again. My form was lost, coordination gone, and so was my patience. I’ve stopped playing basketball for 3 months mainly because of school work and things going on in my life. I was determined to get my skills back no matter how long it’ll take. I started a game of basketball with other people inside the gyms court.
