In the story “ The Scarlet Ibis ” symbolism and theme plays an important role in building the story. The author uses the symbolism of the scarlet ibis to create the theme, that hope is a big part of survival. During the story, the scarlet ibis and Doodle have hope: “ But he didn’t die. (24)” Doodle represents the theme because a plethora of times he could have died, but he didn't because his family and Doodle had hope. He continued to survive against all odds and, because he was supposed to die, there was hope that he would continue to live. The scarlet ibis symbolizes hope, for it traveled from South America all the way to North Carolina:“ It's a scarlet ibis, he said, pointing to the picture. It lives in the tropics-South America to Florida.
