There are many different types of symbols in today’s culture. For example, many people associate lions with strength, valor, and bravery, and owls with wisdom and a hunter of the night. The symbol that is most interesting is the bird. Birds have many different symbols, which stand of a variety of different events and emotions. These are expressed in the poems “”Hope is a Thing with Feathers”, by Emily Dickson, and “Caged Bird” by Maya Angelou, as well as symbolism in the play “The Miracle Worker”. The forms of symbolism in these three literature sections are both similar and different in many ways. In “The Miracle Worker”, the main character Annie is trying to get six-year-old Helen to realize that objects have a name, since Helen is blind and deaf. At one point, Annie says to Helen “Helen, the chick has to come out of its shell sometime. You come out too.” What Annie means is that Helen has physically come out of her “shell”, but her mind has not, and if she wants to learn more about the world, she must come out so that she can understand what she wants to learn. This is kind of like “Caged Bird”, since the bird is also kept from its true potential by a barrier. …show more content…

in the poem “”Hope” is a Thing with Feathers”, The bird is described as a bird that never stops singing,and never asked for anything in return. In a way, the spirit of Hope was left in the jar when Pandora opened it, and as a result, humanity still had hope. The bird in the poem “Caged Bird” is trapped, but like sings of freedom because, just like humanity, it doesn’t give up hope that it may be free from the earthly bonds that hold it fast and experience the freedom that the second bird has.
