Reading this book, I was reminded of the life lessons I have learned growing up around horses and how much in common there is with the high-ends and people such as myself. Growing up, handling equine was just common knowledge for everyone, and because of that I’ve learned that there needs to be a bond and some trust between the rider and horse.

Robert Redford’s “Protecting Our Wild Horses” is a persuasive essay that was written to congress addressing the preservation of the horse’s habitat. In the text he effectively builds a common ground with him and the reader, he gives statistics, and uses inclusive language to strengthen his rhetoric and makes this article compelling to anyone. Redford tries to evoke a sense of patriotism amongst his audience in order to persuade them to take a stand in protecting this countries wild horses. The author keeps reiterating things like “American’s principles” and the “spirit of the American West” and how important these horses are to people and this nation.
Lincoln 's purpose in this excerpt was to convey the message that the country was not ready to take on the issue of slavery. At the time of this speech Lincoln was comparing slavery to trying to ride a young horse. If the country were to jump on the issue of slavery, while public opinion was still unsure it would divide the country, like a rider that is most likely to fall of an unbroken horse. Lincoln also was cautious in that he wanted to look into the topic of slavery more, but at some point, the country would have to face the issue, and try to come up with a compromise on slavery, and the issues that surround it. Otherwise the country would be divided and that is not what Lincoln desired.

First, she uses figurative language to create a sense of mystery and wonder around him. For example, she describes him as a "ghost" and as “dead" (Chapter 1, The Soldier in the Trees). This language creates a sense of unease and suspense, and it makes the reader want to learn more about him. Second, Hartnett uses dialogue to reveal Shepard's character.
This, being the last sentence of the story, returns to the idea that the horse is what keeps her from giving up. The main focus is the beautiful white unicorn, with a tapered spiral horn coming out of its forehead, sitting calmly chained up to a pomegranate tree surrounded by a wooden fence. The unicorn lays gracefully with a smile on its face and eyes looking as if it is hypnotized, looking out into space. It has little pointy ears, similar to a real horse, and its mane draping down from its horn to its back. The horn of the Unicorn is what truly gives the distinguished presence that it carries.
