The science of resocialization within a total institution is a team process. To begin, the staff of the institution erodes the identities of the residence. Secondly, the robust resocialization process involves the intimates attempt to build a different personality of self. Human transformation is not always an easy task to conquer. No matter what our societal role is, personal change requires a concentrated effort. No matter the fact that each total institution provides a variation of end objective purposes, I find that no matter which selected total institution, one's will and concentrated effort to revolutionize or to rehabilitate themselves is mandatory to gaining identity transformation. Patients such as Brian who has OCD disorder leading him to constant yelling has the will to change. No matter his constant drawbacks from changing, he has made a concentrated effort to stay at Bellevue, take his medication, and work on his OCD disability. Involving his mother in his struggles and attempting to stay away from trouble with the law, he does his best to transform his identity. Other patients such as Jamie who is admitted to Bellevue nearly every week, refuses to transform her identity. Her lack of will is transparent. Nearly every time she exits the Bellevue facility she refuses to take her medication and consciously decides to drink alcohol despite the doctor's disapproval. As humans we can advise people to make the right choices but by no means can we control all the choices that they make and the paths they decide to follow. Total institutions such as prisons and mental hospitals can facilitate change but cannot enforce one to change their comfortable habits. Military, on the other hand, is a total institution which enforces change from the first day of arrival. As observed in the video of training camp, haircuts are a must along with obeying the rules of the cadets superior. If one is not willing to change in a military setting, then they have the option of exiting the facility and keeping grip their personal identity. With change being the main objective it is not inevitable within total institutions, nothing is more powerful and effective as the personal will to transform one’s own personal identity. Throughout this course I have found that no matter how much time and effort the total institution puts into the individual, the individual is required to transform from the inside
