Change is one of the hardest things to do, the ones who change are considered misfit, rebels, and trouble makers. These people find different ways to meet their goals, and do not listen to the status quo. They think for themselves and decide what is wrong and what is right. We can agree or disagree with them. Turn them in to heroes or villains. But we must never ignore them as they are the one that are crazy enough to change the world for better or worse. Through different memories in battle, we see how war can change a person, as one is labeled a villain while the other a hero. In the novella “The Wars” by Timothy Findley, the setting, plot, and characterization of Robert Ross, shows how a villain is produced. The setting of the story takes place in Canada, British Isles, and France during World War One. A summarization of the plot illustrates that a Robert Ross’s has changed due to war. Robert volunteers to join the war after his eldest sister Rowena dies. As he comes from money, he becomes in charge of a convoy. He meets five other soldiers, and experience trench warfare at its finest. Robert takes in charge and saves himself and his fellow soldiers. Here Robert makes his first kill as he shoots a German soldier, shortly realizing his mistake as the German soldier had no interest in killing them, but was bird watching, “This would haunt him”. The setting of the story takes place in Britain and France during World War One. A summarization of the plot shows bravery, strength, perseverance of different soldiers who endure the overwhelming obstacles of war to save a horse. The story starts off with Albert a child, who trains a horse named Joey. Joey is taken away from Albert by his father who sells Joey to the army. Albert is distraught tries to join the army to be with his horse but because he is not old enough he is denied. The Captain of the army, Nicholas promises Albert that he will keep Joey save and bring him home after the war is over. Albert is content as he sees that Nicholas keeps his promises. Nicholas being in the first wave of soldiers is killed by a German machine gun. Joey is left alone as the only person to survive. Gunther a German solder see Joey and fights his Captain to keep the horse instead of killing him. Gunther and his little brother who is not old enough to be in the army are forced to separate by their commanding officer. Gunther, who made a promise to his mother to keep him and his little brother Michael safe, escape from the army taking Joey with them. They hide in a windmill and are found by their Captain. The boys leave the windmill and tell Joey to stay. The Captain gives them both a chance to make up any excuses other than the truth for them to save their
