Houston Food Bank is a non-profit organization, founded in 1982, that collects and distributes food to hunger relief charities. It’s known as one of the largest food banks in the nation. According to their website, Houston Food Bank provides 59 million nutritious meals to food pantries, soup kitchens, senior centers and other agencies, feeding about 800,000 people each year. Additional community services range from nutrition education to assistance with food stamp applications and hands-on job training. Every dollar donated to the Houston Food Bank provides the equivalent of three meals for an individual. Their mission is to grow an annual distribution of 100 million nutritious meals by 2018. Within this volunteer experience, we all showed teamwork, good communication and networking skills. Teamwork is the combined action of a group of people, especially when effective and efficient. Communication is defined as imparting or exchanging of information between two or more people. Great communication was shown within my group since we’re working like in an assembly line we talked to the people next to us and got to know one another which made the volunteering experience really fun. Within our group we were in charge of making a bag that contained a bag of cereal, milk, a can of beans, corn, ravioli, mango slices, apple sauce and two granola bars. If a person was struggling putting an item in the bag since there was many bags being made at once everyone was willing to help each other out so as team we wouldn’t fall behind. Networking is to meet and to talk to new people. While I was at the “Houston Food Bank,” there were several people who gave me more information about the food bank in case I ever decided on returning back to the food bank and willing to volunteer more. Service-learning involves students in a community service activity and applies the experience to personal and academic development. Service learning is more of an educational approach. Connecting real life experiences to classroom objectives. Volunteerism is an activity that involves doing something that you want that benefits the environment or the community without getting paid for it. Community service is doing something that benefits the community most of the time it’s a mandatory order for people to do from the court or school. It involves more structure and commitment compared to volunteerism where it’s more flexible since you get to choose where you want to volunteer at. The goal of all three terms are similar which is to benefit an individual in some way. Participating in these services is a learning experience, it could be from learning life skills, communication skills, and a learning experience that changes how they should be more grateful for the things they do have than focusing on what they don’t
