For many years I have been known for being a very talented athlete. But what many people do not know is that I was once in the Elba Marching band. Being in the band has taught me a lot of things, like reading music, discipline and organization. The most interesting thing about the band was that we had to learn how to read music. At first this was a challenge for me, but I soon got the hang of it.
Ever since I was a kid I didn’t think that I was good at anything. My pastor said that everyone had a calling, a gift, something that nobody else can do better than that person. It was so hard watching people around me find their gift, like my sister. My little sister is good at about anything art related. She can draw, play the flute, and if she ever did theatre she would probably be good at that too.
Working together to overcome adversity is a prominent theme in “Life As We Knew It”. This is because there is so much adversity to face in the daily life of Miranda’s family and other people living during their predicament, but they don't have the energy or time to face it alone. They support each other and work together to accomplish important tasks. In fact, one of the main reasons why Miranda’s family survived may be that they helped each other work through problems. Here are a few examples of when Miranda’s family had to work together to overcome adversity.
As an illustration, I had the curiosity of a cat when music was involved, so I initially played trombone, but before junior high was over, I moved through two more brass instruments, tenor sax, and the piano, holistically growing my music skills. From my teacher, I had complete support each time I wanted to learn something new, but on the condition that I would work tirelessly at it. She also spurred me in my love of the sciences, ensuring that I was doing well in my coursework and discussing plans for my future in engineering or some related field. Simply stated, my music teacher pushed me to do what I love, for the fire of inspiration gives life zest in music and everything else.
Every person has an interest or a talent which separates them from the rest of society allowing them to become an individual. It wasn’t until I decided to audition for the North Carolina Elementary Honors Chorus in 2009 that I discovered my talents lie within the realm of music. Becoming an active musician has not only helped me grow as a person by allowing me to build and strengthen social and cognitive skills, but has also helped me to appreciate each component of music, and has also taught me how to become a supportive and attentive member of the audience. That fateful day in the fall of 2009 when I heard that I was one out of one hundred and six students to make it into the North Carolina Elementary Honors Chorus was the day I realized that I had a passion for choir and for music. After that I continued to stay in choir in middle school, and eventually made it into Middle School Honors Chorus in 2013.
Ego Trippin’ I was born to sing. My beautiful voice sounds like a cheerful bird busily chirping in the early morning sun. I can dance just as well, with my feet gracefully sliding across the smooth floor like a tiptoeing butterfly. The piano that I play bows down to me as I gently push down each and every one of its soft, white and black keys.
After the obstacles he has overcame Walt Disney once said “All the adversity I’ve had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me… You may not realize when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.” Everyone has a time in there life where they need to get passed something that is in there way. When this time or times come everyone would find a way to get through it, whether it is asking for help or doing it on their own. When someone says the word adversity one would say you have to be hard working, determined, and strong would pop into their mind.
Adversity What is adversity? Does it help define you? Does it play in developing a person's character? This has been questioned, argued, and speculated countless times. "Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant" (Horace).
Throughout my life, I have overcome numerous situations of adversity. Whether it be successfully juggling my education, sports, and two jobs, or pushing myself to battle through injuries in sports, I know I have dealt with situations the average person would give up in. However, I think the most immense hurdle I have had to clear was struggling through depression. I have dealt with it ever since the start of my freshman year in high school. My depression was something I allowed to alter me; in school, at home, around my friends, in sports.
I have always been a particularly musical person. When I was younger, I wanted to become a singer when I grew up, but upon joining the choir in elementary I realized I did not have the talent for singing that I thought I had. Continually singing off key and never sounding as good as my peers did, I decided to confine myself to singing at home where only my family could hear me. Despite this revelation that I was, in fact, a terrible singer, I still wanted to participate in some type of musical performance and decided to join the band in middle school. After trying out various different instruments, I settled on the flute and quickly fell in love.
As simple as this song is and as simple as my dad’s decision to sing it to me throughout my childhood is, I think that it has shaped a big part of who I am. I think this short song influenced my creativity,
Music is my greatest skill. I started when I was four4 years old when my mom signed me up for piano lessons. and apparently I progressed very rapidly. Every year, I would participate in Certificate of Merit where I would be tested in performance and music theory. Through hours of practice and persistencynot giving up, I was able to pass level ten10 in eighth grade, which would qualifiyed me to become a piano teacher if I wanted to.

14 years have passed since I took my first steps into kindergarten. Back then, everything was all fun and games. Who would have known that time would fly as fast as the speed of light. In a blink of an eye, here I am now, writing an essay for my college application. Different ideas and thoughts popped up in my head, including the cliche introduction that I presented.
There are many incidents one met in life that change the whole concept of living. Similarly I had an incident which not only change my vision towards life but also to the words you speak and how much they hurt someone enough that you then regret of saying them. It was a very dull morning for me.
