Jackson the Autocrat Andrew Jackson was an autocratic leader. He is an autocratic leader because of the Indian Removal, Spoils System, and National Bank Controversy. During the Indian Removals, Jackson showed to be very autocratic. In the “Indian Removal document 1” and “Indian Removal document 2” Jackson has shown to be very autocratic. “Indian Removal document 1” has shown that the states are moving straight towards Indian land, not the surrounding land. On the map, it looks like there is other land they could have moved on to. But, they chose specifically Indian land. Not only are they moving straight into Indian land, in “Indian Removal document 2” the Indians are being forced to move into even more western lands. This has caused problems for the Indians because they are familiar with the land they live on, not the land they are being forced to move too. “Spoils System document 3” talks about how Jackson hired an early supporter to work with him. This early supporter however was a criminal. Did Jackson know this guy was a criminal? Yes, yes he did. Even when someone warned him that Swartwout tended to have criminal tendencies he still hired him because he supported him. Then, Swartwout stole 15$ million dollars from Jackson. Of course, this hurt the economy. In this situation, Jackson was not thinking about the nation and what's best for it. This also ties in with “Spoils System document 2” because this document talks about giving men less time in office. He felt like getting rid of time in office, Jackson also called time in office “plain and simple.” He was mainly making this decision off of his thoughts. He mentioned himself but not the nation. This was based on his decision and how he felt about
