Our beautiful 31st state, California, is in a major drought. What is causing the valley to sink more than it ever has in recent years? “Sipping California Dry” authored by Matt Richtel, goes beyond the issues at hand by interviewing the farmers themselves, detailing exactly what is happening in the golden state with pictures that show just how bad it is in California. This drought is a real issue, and the author works very hard to bring to light certain aspects of it that we may not know about in a detailed, informative way.
So many lands, farms, fields of fruits and vegetables are gone because of the drought. All this happened because of a shortage of water from once green and healthy crops to dead dry brittle crops that are abandoned by a drought. For example, we had to cut back on watering my lawn and it went from a green lawn to a dead lawn, because of cut backs. Mat Wiser said that, “ Water will become one of the defining limits to human development and a compound factor in human misery,”(2009 Wiser). If we don’t have water we will die faster without water than food, we can’t be greedy on something that we thrive and survive
In the article, “In Hurricane Harvey’s Wake, We Need a Green ‘New Deal’”, the author Rebecca Elliot intrigues her audience by informing them about a horrific hurricane that struck the area of Houston, Texas. During her informative action, Elliot begins to share her personal opinion about the need for a ‘New Deal.’ To further this argument, she utilizes the three major appeals to her article. This strategy not only informs the reader on many facts and opinions, but allows her audience to conjure up an image on their mind of the event and urges them to take immediate action. Throughout the article, the author continues to address the matter at hand and enlighten the readers with her argument towards creating a New Deal by implementing a variety of rhetorical strategies.
Hurricane Matthew began to form itself from a tropical wave off the coast of Africa in late September. It has been calculated that 26 citizens have died as a result of Hurricane Matthew’s flooding. Robert Ray, the author of the CNN News article, ‘‘Hurricane Matthew: Days of disaster unfold under a cloudless sky,’’ wrote this to inform his audience of the monstrous damage that the hurricane has done from Florida to North Carolina, after it hit Haiti and other Caribbean countries. His audience is the family and love ones of the citizens that experienced the hurricane hit and those that are concerned of the terror the people went through and want to find more information in how to help. Similar to Maltby’s results, Lopez concluded that hope was a better indication of productivity than any other factor. On a greater scale, hope has shown to be life-altering. A study by the University of Texas determined that hope can be life-saving. Out of the 800 people they surveyed, “29 percent of people classified as hopeless had died, compared with just 11 percent of the hopeful” (Weir). All of the studies conducted proved how inspiring hope can be.
The Zodiac killer was linked to at least five killings in the bay area of California between the late years of 1960 and early years of 1970. These are just the ones the Zodiac Killer either called in or wrote his famous ciphers about, he could be linked to several others. This is a crime that never has been found to have a definite killer, but has many suspects. The strongest one being Arthur Leigh Allen. Mr. Allen was so strong of a suspect he had enough evidence against him for three search warrants.
In my opinion, this island has grown from where they started but are not fully ready to become an independent nation. The people may feel “whole” because they have built their culture from all of these different types of people that have taken over their island these past hundreds of years, but they still heavily lean on America’s government. Why would Puerto Rico choose to become independent anyway? People born on the island are automatically born as United States citizens and have all of the rights of a natural born, U.S. citizen. Puerto Rico is ruled by our government, has the same rights as Americans, and even use the U.S. dollar as their currency.
Puerto Ricans all have mixed feelings about their government but mostly, they’re okay with it. The capital of Puerto Rico is San Juan. Puerto Rico is a Democracy, Republic. An elected Governor is the head of government.
Somewhere during fleeing your home in an hour and driving through flood waters high enough to submerge more than half of an SUV, you realize that the only thing you truly need is your life. As prayers flew off the lips of my siblings and I, I wasn’t thinking about my house or the new shoes I had just bought a week ago. I was thinking that I just wanted my family to escape with our lives. When the flood hit, Like Hulga in Good Country People by Flannery O’Connor, I felt like I had gotten a leg taken out from right under me. I had always considered myself to be extremely appreciative for what I have.
Authority is what creates order, so when authority is lost, chaos reigns. In William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, authority is needed on the island so that chaos isn’t created. Authority is needed for survival, hope, and order. Survival is based on authority. People look up to authority to tell them how to survive.
Has the lack of water supply affected your life in the past three years? California has been in a drought recently, and there has been a great decrease in citizen water possession. The state should regulate water usage because people are using too much water, and it is affecting other people. There have been many cases of water shortages in communities. “For Angelica Gallegos, the worst part has been going without a shower for five months.”
Now, as all you may know I am a strong activist for the care of our Earth and environment. A lot of the recent environmental problems in our great nation that I just could not ignore. One of the first problems is the West Coast Drought, we need to find ways to save our water. The first way is for our Farmers to use less water when watering crops in the West. It will just be for sometime before we are stable with water over there.
Life can really suck sometimes. It can give us the illusion that everything is going to go smoothly as planned, but then it surprises us with tragedy or rough, unexpected circumstances. It is during these times that we just don’t know what to do and feel hopeless. But hope is always there. Sometimes it’s obvious, and sometimes it seems impossible to find, but there is always hope for any situation or circumstance.
The status of Puerto Rico as a United States territory places the residents in a figurative state of limbo, and the United States should do something to make a change.
