Healthcare significantly changed from the period 1918-39 to 1945-79 in many ways: including the accessibility of healthcare, how hospitals were funded and then the quality of healthcare provided to the public. Although it seems the introduction of the NHS almost made the provision of healthcare the complete opposite by its introduction in 1948, through further analysis, it can be seen it did not in fact change as much as perceived, but the change that did happen was still evidently drastic in which people’s lives were improved. The best within this period were teaching hospitals, which were attached to universities meaning they would have a higher knowledge of illnesses and how to care for them such as the RVI in Newcastle. Those going to a teaching hospital could often get free treatment through luck, as if there was any person with an unknown illness they would offer their services for free in order to learn about how to care for it in the future. Teaching hospitals were dispersed unevenly around Britain, making healthcare inconsistent. The worst hospitals within Britain during this time period were poor law infirmaries, which were more common in areas across Britain and people often believed it was lucky to make it out alive. On the other hand, Healthcare in Britain changed drastically in 1945-79 by creating a more universal healthcare system which would provide everyone, regardless of class, protection from the cradle to the grave, as suggested by the Beveridge Report of 1942. The NHS act changed this by creating consistency across the country. However, specialist hospitals remain the best and most desired hospital, which you'd be deemed lucky to live near.
