Lincoln was born on February twelfth. He was president from 1861 through 1865. He died on April fifthteenth, after being assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. Abraham Lincoln had a huge impact on the Civil War. He was the one to decide when it would start. The first attack was on Fort Sumter. Lincoln got together 75,000 troops and declared a rebellion. His view on slavery, the Emancipation Proclamation, and him trusting Grant helped the Union win the Civil War by.

Lincoln always hated slavery, but he was not very vocal about it. He was an abolitionist. "I have always hated slavery, I think as much as any abolitionist." Grant helped the Union. Grant won the Battle of Vicksburg. The Battle of Vicksburg is considered to be one of the huge turning points of the war. Lincoln later appointed Grant to lieutenant general in 1864. Grant was then steadfast on making general Robert E. Lee to surrender. After Grant’s armies had been weakened significantly over the next year, Lee surrendered in 1865 at Appomattox Court House after the Battle of Richmond. Lee surrendering ended the Civil War.

The Civil War ended on April 9, 1865. The Union won the war thanks to Abraham Lincoln’s actions. He was against slavery, he created a document called the Emancipation Proclamation, and trusted Ulysses S. Grant. These are three of the many things that helped the Union to win the Civil War. It is because the Union won that the thirteenth amendment was added to the Bill of Rights. The thirteenth amendment states that slavery is abolished. There is now no more slavery in the United States of
