Ancient Romes economy was mostly based on slaves and farming. The Romans main concern was feeding their large amount of people. Agriculture and trade was what ruled the Roman economy. The slaves did most of the things that supported the economy. Such as crops production they would have different grains, olives, and grapes. Farmers could give crops insead of paying their taxes. Because of this farmers didn’t really want to increase their amount of crops because more crops meant more taxes. They traded a lot of products from Europe, Asia, and Africa. The roads helped to transport the products easier and quicker. Sometimes they would ship goods like metals, food, stones, and different supplies to make buildings. The slaves and their owners would live in the towns and the owners would have land that they would rent to slaves or have their own slaves farm on it. The women in the town would waitresses or they would be beggars A lot of women would work at their house and sew and knit. They would trade a lot of different things from a lot of different places such as Syria, Austria, England, and North Africa. Sometimes they would even trade to farther places such as China and India. The roads were very important for trade and military. They also traveled by boat. It’s faster and cheaper to travel by boat across the empire.
