“The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who did not do anything about it.” These are legendary words from one of the genius minds behind the Manhattan project, Albert Einstein. People like Andrew Szeptycki purpose in this world was to make it a little less dangerous especially during the horrors of the mass genocide of 6 million Jews along with other religious groups throughout the holocaust. War officially broke out in Europe when Germany invaded Poland on September 1st, 1939 but Andrew Szeptycki wasn’t fully impacted by this war until late June 1941. He had always sympathized the Jews and in fact even learned biblical and modern Hebrew, so he could better relate to their communities. …show more content…

This event directly put Szeptycki along with his Ukrainian Catholic Greek Monastery in with it all. Andrew Szeptycki is the definition of bold and brave all wrapped up into one man for his brave actions he took when the war first broke out in Europe. There was no immediate consequence to Szeptycki and his home once the war first started in 1939, it did not affect him. Beginning in late June 1941 it directly affected him and his immediate response was bold. Szeptycki was not sent to a ghetto or any sort of concentration/ death camp as for Hitler was not targeting his religious beliefs. Leading up to the war he had studied Hebrew so by this time he was already able to relate to the Jewish communities and his initial reaction was to help them. This way those kids will now be able to fly under the radar and have a substantially better chance to escape with their lives. Not a single Jewish child that had been saved by Szeptycki were lost to the Nazis. This is where it all started… The progression of the war was quite rapid, Szeptycki continued to hide Jews in monasteries all around Ukraine and couldn’t convert any of them to Christianity. As the year of 1941 ended he would still write to the Germans in hopes they would end communism and get the Soviets out of Ukraine but with no change in results from the soviets, he finally lost hope. Szeptycki takes his action towards the Jews up as we have now entered the year of 1942. Szeptycki personally wrote a letter to Heinrich Himmler, demanding the release of Ukrainian soldiers from work at Nazi Jewish concentration camps. Then demanded that Ukrainian police stop murdering Jews at once! Along with the progression of the war in Europe, you will begin to see the progression of Andrew Szeptycki become more outraged and radical as time goes on.
