As stated by Cassius Dio, “The Roman people had been robbed of their democratic form of government, but had not become a monarchy in the strict sense of the term; Antony and Caesar still controlled affairs on an equal footing, having divided by lot most of the functions of government between them, and though nominally they considered all the rest as belonging to them in common, in reality they were trying to appropriate it to themselves, according as either of them was able to seize any advantage over the other…” (437). Their way of ruling turned Rome into a republic system. Republics are governmental systems that rule over a nation by elected officials. Octavious stated how he conducted himself in civil and military positions, and in ruling the State in all parts of the world in peace and in war. He also gave an account of his private and domestic life that described his character and his fortune at home. He explained this in depth about his household from his youth until the last day of his life. Said in “The Life of Augustus”, starting with when Antony served under Caesar, he was loyal and harsh against his enemies. Even through the civil war with Caesar against Rome he stayed true. Once Caesar was killed is when Antony started to lose his love for Rome. He was declared the New Dionysis and after Antony’s first military failure in Parthia, he made an alliance with Cleopatra. Soon after, Cleopatra was declared the New Isis. Now Cleopatra and Antony were seen as Gods. Together they had two sons and a daughter. Officially, the attacks Octavian has against Antony start to arise. This is where Octavian introduces Antony’s will and how he should not be loved by Rome any longer. As stated in “The Life of Augustus”, “He bore the death of his kin with far more resignation than their misconduct” (223). Every single one of his kin, besides the Egyptians, would receive nothing after Antony’s death. He cast Rome aside.
