Chapter 9: After returning from his leave, Paul sees that his friends are still alive. Relieved that they are still alive, he shares his food with them. His friends felt that Paul was lucky because he was away from the war to visit his family. His friends explain that while he was gone, they heard that they are all going to Russia.
Paul planned his trip to New York hundreds of times before being able to actually go. He wanted to make sure each moment was filled with riches and luxurious items. “He finally felt now that his surroundings explained him…. He had only to glance down at his attire to reassure himself that here it would be impossible for anyone to humiliate him” (267). He was finally somewhere where he thought he belonged.

On page 268, Paul explains that he is let out and sent to the front. Paul misses the presence of Kropp, but that's part of war. He has to succeed to the front without and hope for him to come back.

Paul’s name is symbolic because Paul from the bible was bad but then he changed and became one of Jesus’ disciples. Paul becomes friends with Grant and Jefferson who he knows have been treated unjustly and stays with them through the whole thing. When he goes to see Jefferson executed he tells Grant “When Vincent asked him if he had any last words, he looked at the preacher and said ‘Tell nannan I walked.’ And Straight he walked Mr. Wiggins.
Upon his return from leave, Paul states, “I can hardly control myself any longer. But it will soon be all right again back here with Kat and Albert. This is where I belong.” (201). Paul has become increasingly drawn away from people at home and toward his comrades from the battlefield.

World War 1, also known as “The Great War,” began in 1914 and lasted until 1918 due to rising tensions in Europe towards the end of the 18th century and beginning of the 19th century. A sense of nationalism developed in Europe during this time for people sharing a common geography or culture. This sense of pride gave countries the motivation to imperialize other countries and force assimilation on them. At the same time, these imperializing countries were building up their armies to make conquering and battling other countries easier. Tensions increased even further, and the most powerful countries banded together in alliances.
