In May 1577, a man named, John White” sailed on the ship Aid, as part of an expedition to America. The trip was commanded by Martin Frobisher. The reason for the trip was so that he could find precious metals, and a northwest passage to Asia. White sailed to Greenland and Baffin Island trying to find a new passageway. After many months he realized there wasn’t a northwest passage, nor were there any precious metals to be found.
“I began to stop accumulating and begin the infinitely more serious and difficult task of wise distribution,” as said by Andrew Carnegie. The industrialist and hard-working Andrew Carnegie was a very successful businessman and philanthropist. Andrew Carnegie provided the United States economy to rise due to his steel production in the 1800’s and 1900’s. Although some may think Carnegie was a brutal businessman, Andrew Carnegie enhanced the United States due to his business investments, his philanthropy, and his educational institutions. One way Andrew Carnegie enhanced The United States is his business investments.
Herbert 1: Ira C. Herbert begins his remarks by explaining that the Coca-Cola company has come to the attention with the situation involving the Grove Press Inc. using the slogan, “It’s the Real Thing” to advertise the book Diary of a Harlem Schoolteacher. Herbert is utterly demanding when it comes to suggesting to the Grove Press Inc. to advertise the book in a different manner, eliminating the usage “It’s the Real Thing”. For instance, in the letter, he defends possession of the slogan by establishing that the “company has made use of “Its the Real Thing” to advertise Coca-Cola long prior to the publication of the book, we are writing to ask you to stop using this theme or slogan…” (para 2). In other words, the Coca-Cola company is quite
Before Herman B Wells took charge of IU as president in 1938, the University was a small Midwestern college with just 11,000 students. By the time he died in 2000, it had become a world-renowned institution with more than 90,000 students on eight campuses. “He put Indiana University on the map, not just in the Big Ten, but nationally and internationally,” said James Capshew, associate professor of history and philosophy of science and author of a Wells biography. Wells served as the 11th president of IU from 1938 to 1962 and as chancellor from 1962 until he passed away in 2000.
In 1984 they put their faith in a charismatic 21 year called Michael Jordan. At the time it was a potentially risky move, but it proved immensely fruitful for both parties. Nike propelled Jordan’s celebrity, and Jordan propelled Nike’s sales - even today Air Jordan remains a billion dollar franchise. Nike have also enjoyed the ability to remain in the minds of the public thanks to their memorable logo. Phil Knight payed just $35 dollars to a Portland State art student in 1971 for the famous ‘swoosh’, and in return has gained a symbol recognizable all over the world, and something that has become an iconic part of Western
When you hear the word “hero,” what names come to mind? What exactly makes a hero? One thing I’m certain of is that Andrew Carnegie was definitely NOT one of them. A hero is someone with integrity, concern for others, and protects. Carnegie, a selfish but self-made, made poor and unethical actions and decisions, not owning the traits of a hero.
Andrew Carnegie was a Scottish immigrant who came to the United States with his family at the age of 13. He had little formal education; however, his family believed in the importance of books. His family raised him in Allegheny PA where he worked himself up from being a factory worker, to telegrapher operator, to assistant telegrapher, to eventually superintendent of the railroad (Andrew). While he was employed at the railroad, Carnegie began dabbling with investments in oil where he brought in substantial income (Rags). Because of the huge success, he left the railroad industry to focus on other business ventures like the Keystone Bridge Company and Keystone Telegraph Company (installation of telegraph wiring in railroad tracks).
Nike did not make a hug impact with it’s line of golf shoes until signing with a young golfer named Tiger Woods in 1996. At the time they had not started to make any golf equipment, but Woods endorsed all of their apparel. In 1998 the company came up with Nike Golf and started to produce it’s own lines of clubs, balls, along with their shoes and apparel. They had several pro golfers endorsing their products, but Tiger Woods remains the most recognizable. While using athletic stars is great for any company who wants their products to be worn by the best so that consumers will also want to buy it, this can lead to problems when there is trouble or the athlete is not performing at their best.

Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman co-founded the company in Beaverton, Oregon in 1964. At this time, the company was known as Blue Ribbon Sports until 1978 when it officially became Nike, Inc (About Nike, 2011). Nike has been around much longer than most would think and continues to be the leading trend setter in athletic wear. Nike was started in January of 1964. The athletic company began as just a small clothing distributing company out of the truck of Phil Knight’s, owner and CEO of Nikes, Car. The Saying you started from the bottom is very true when it comes to Nike who now leads in sales of all athletic gear compared to Adidas who at the time of 1964 was the most popular athletic company. From starting in a truck of a car no one would suspect that this company would not only be defined as the definition of ‘cool’ when purchasing clothing and shoes from stores all over the United States but yet the brand that carries our pop culture.

They also employed her to design the new NIKE logo, paying her only $35 for the rights to use it. Although Phil Knight was not initially fond of the logo, it is one of the most recognisable designs throughout the world today. Along with the new logo design came a new stream of success. They went from $10 million to $270 million in sales4 in the late 70s and are worth billions today
