Bob Marley was born on February 6, 1945, in St. Ann Parish, Jamaica. In 1963, Marley formed the reggae band the Wailing Wailers with a few of his friend. The Wailers' band signed with Island records in 1972.This was the beginning his fruitful and rousing music career. Throughout Marley’s career he sold more than 20 million records. Marley and his music became a recognized symbol to fight against mental and physical oppression. Marley was mostly inspired by his religion of Rastafarianism. Rastafarianism is a religion that many reggae musicians practice and draw inspiration on for their music. The religion is Judeo-Christian theology using the bible, and the teaching of Minister Marcus Garvery. Rastafarianism led the followers to strongly believe in standing up for the rights of the poor and using the word of God as a savior. Marcus Garvey’s words and message were one of the main driving forces in Marley’s music. Marley was close to his religion and he used music as a way of expression much like every other artist we have studied thus far. Marley also was inspired by artist like James Brown who made a difference in calming riots during the civil rights
