Calvin Coolidge: Presidential Research Paper When Calvin Coolidge took after the sudden passing of Warren G. Harding, he had a mission to clean up the corrupt Harding administration, provide stability and respect for the American people. Coolidge was a pro-business conservative, who favored tax cuts and limited government spending. He believed that the size and the scope of the government should not be limited. Claims have been made that his reputation for honestly and integrity helped restore faith in the government. After learning more about Calvin Coolidge, it seems he did not accomplish a lot after he cleaned up the Harding Administration. His first mission was to clean up the corrupt administration Harding left behind. He appointed a special counsel to investigate the Teapot Dome oil-lease, in which the United States Secretary was accused and convicted of accepting bribes to lease federal oil reserves without competitive bidding among oil companies. Coolidge did not stop there, he went on to dismiss the United States attorney general, Harry M. Daugherty. Daugherty was apart of Hardings “Ohio Gang” and was working with bootleggers, which was a violation of the Eighteenth Amendment at the time. Laissez-faire ruling had been used time and time again by presidents but many people believe it lead to the downfall of the Great Depression. Coolidge made the economy too strong during his time as president. Companies began to expand more, and eventually they were making more products than they were selling. Companies had to cut jobs to compensate for the over production but this had people fearing they would loose their jobs so they started saving more money. Companies began to sell even less product than before which many believe less us to the Great Depression.
