It all began in the location of Canton Mississippi in the early 1990's. The book is about the raping of a young female at the age of 10 named Tonya, and the trial preceding the incidents that occurred. From the raping there was a man named Carl Lee Hailey, her father who worked at the mill begins to take a dominant role in the book. While saying that the biggest character in the book would have to be Jake Brigance. Jake Brigance is Carl Lee’s Lawyer and is also the man who took on the trial. The biggest problem with anyone taking such a trail was the fact that this was a crime that involved people of white color and black color. During a hearing of Carl Lee they expected him to have a guilty plea but instead did the opposite they went for the not guilty plea for reason of insanity. Knowing that Mr. Carl Lee would not get a fair trial in the state of Mississippi, Jake asked for a change of venue which later on was denied. While the judge was thinking about the change of venue the two males which were murdered began to look for the infamous Ku-Klux-Klan to do some dirty work for them and make the lives of Carl Lee and those associated with them a living nightmare. The Ku-Klux-Klan began to terrorize everyone by burning crosses in the lawns and even go to extreme by trying to kill the lawyer Jake by placing a bomb which ended up being defused. The NAACP said “Carl Lee’s acquittal for the killing of two white men will do more for the black people of Mississippi than any event since we integrated the schools “His conviction would be a slap at us, a symbol of deep seeded racism- perhaps enough to ignite a nation." Carl Lee said that all that money that was raised he wanted to go to his family, because while he is in jail he cannot support them and they need to live as well. Jake stood by Mr. Lee’s side and accepted all nine hundred dollars that Carl Lee could afford. With the town at its feet the jury selection had to take place. What was expected to happen happened, an all-white jury. While all this was happening, outside there were riots going on with the blacks and the Klan chanting. The racial differences got to be too much and fights broke out. A Klan member was set on fire, the black sheriff was beaten, and Jake was also stabbed in the leg trying to help the rioting. This wouldn’t be the only damage the Klan did to Jake, later that night his house was burned down. Enough was enough when it came down to the riots so the National Guard had to come
