A historical event that continues to have major effects on the United States is the Civil Right Movement (CRM) which led to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (CRA). The Civil Rights Movement was a sociopolitical movement that championed equal rights under the law for Blacks and other minorities. After the American Civil War, the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the Constitution were supposed to guarantee equal rights for all Americans, but the law allowed for "separate but equal" facilities such as schools, restaurants, restrooms, and drinking fountains; these laws were heavily enforced primarily in the Southern United States.
