Comte de Rochambeau was a French nobleman and general that led the French army in the American Revolution. He began his military career with the War of the Austrian Succession and from there he grew to become a key component to the American win in the American Revolution. Rochambeau was a huge asset to the French military and improved French military training, allowing them to be well prepared in the American Revolution.
On July 1, 1725, in Vendôme, France, Marshal Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, comte de Rochambeau, was born to Joseph-Charles de Vimeur and Marie-Claire-Thérèse Begon. After the Seven Years’ War ended in 1763, he focused on improving military training in the French army. He later received the Grand Croix d'Ordre de St. Louis, the highest class in the Royal and Military Order of St. Louis, in 1771 and was offered the position of Minister of War. Rochambeau declined and instead, he concentrated on the much needed military reforms. Another 5 years later in 1776, Comte de Rochambeau became the governor of Villefranch-en-Roussillon and he served under the Comte de Vaux to prepare for an invasion of Great Britain planned for 1779. To objective of this invasion was to take advantage of Britain weakened defense since they sent most of their military to the colonies. Because of poor naval planning and outbreak of smallpox, the invasion was cancelled. In the February of 1778, France signed a treaty of alliance. The French army is now in better shape because of Rochambeau’s reforms and the preparation for the Great Britain invasion. At that time, Marquis de Lafayette returned from America to help plan the deployment of French forces in America, he also emphasized that the commander must be sensitive
