In The Count of Monte Cristo one character that had changed dramatically throughout the book was Danglars. During the first few pages of the book Danglars is very cynical towards Dantes “I’m afraid Dantes good luck is going to hold out. He’ll marry the girl, become captain of the Pharaon and have the laugh on all of us, unless…unless I take a hand in things” and decides take part in ruining Dantes life (Dumas 16). This quote means Danglars is very jealous of Dantes and wishes he could be rewarded with the same kind of treatment because Danglars is an envious person at the beginning of the book. Danglars then goes to Dantes wedding along with Caderousse (still in the beginning of the book) and has an evil smile on his face. In the beginning his character had unholy thoughts and a vexatious attitude towards Dantes simply because he was envious of him. Now towards the middle of the book Danglars is filthy rich from his very own success. Danglars then goes to the count’s door and gives the servant his card to give to the Count. The Count of Monte Cristo then shows up at Danglars house and Danglars is pleased to meet him. There is a change in Danglars instead of not trusting people like he had done in the beginning, he completely trusts the count and even welcomes him into his family “a client like you is almost part of the family” (Dumas 203). This is a huge change in Danglars he is now very welcoming to certain people because of his wealth. Now more than half way towards the end of the book Danglars is more reserved, he doesn’t trust those as much after he lost a lot of his money.
