Cuneiform was a system of writing created in Mesopotamia around 3,000 BCE. Scribes used a reed to make “wedge shaped” indentations on a clay tablet. Cuneiform started as way of keeping track of business transactions but was later used to create alphabets for the languages spoken in Ancient Mesopotamia. The Code of Hammurabi (discussed later) was written in cuneiform.
To began, the ancient civilization of the Mesopotamian invented cuneiform. Cuneiform was the first written developed by the Sumerians over 5000 years ago (Doc. 1). When it comes to advances I would say that the Egyptians have the Mesopotamians beat in the sense that they were able to invent more and have more things that other cultures were able to use in different eras. The Egyptians created the Papyrus, which is their version of paper. They used this when they were writing letters, stories and writing down their history. Mesopotamia used reeds as their writing tools and they wrote things down on clay that was soften and made into tablets. Although, the Mesopotamians wrote down stories that would later be translated into what is known today as the Hebrew writings that make up the Old Testament.

Although the Mesopotamians and Egyptians of 3500 to 1500 B.C.E. were similar due to social hierarchy and power roles, nevertheless, the differences between Mesopotamians and Egyptians are evident with politics. This is because of the way Egyptians saw opposing countries as enemies and how Mesopotamians saw other countries as trading partners. The Mesopotamians viewed their priests as extremely powerful people, believing that priests were connected spiritually to the gods and worked hard to appease the gods. The priests would use this to their advantage. For example, selling amulets to citizens to ‘ward off evil spirits’ was just a business move for the priests to make more money and keep their power.
Civilization is the cooperation between individuals within a region. The first civilizations were Mesopotamian and Egyptian civilizations. Both civilizations acquired a different environment. However, their environment promoted religion, specifically polytheism. Although their environments were different, both civilizations were in harmony about the existence of many gods.

Small marks were made with a pointed, wedge-shaped stylus on clay tablets, and were used to recorded business transactions.
